MARY SEYMOUR HUNTER Obituary
Her parents, Charles Elmer Seymour of Wilton, Connecticut and Christine Susan Jackson of Durham, Ontario, Canada, had been living in China since 1911. Mary's first school was the Tientsin American School. In 1936 the family came to reside in the Jackson family home, "The Maples", in Durham.
After graduating from Durham High School, Mary attended the University of Toronto for four years, majoring in Modern Languages. She spent the next four years in New York City where she was employed as a secretary in the import/export field.
In 1951 Mary joined the Women's Army Corps under the direct commission program and served at three locations, Camp McCoy, Des Moines, and St. Louis.
Mary married Lt. Colonel Allen M. Hunter of Phoenix, AZ in 1955 and resigned her commission the next year. Her husband retired in 1966 after serving in Turkey, Chicago, and Fort Polk. In March 1967 they settled in Anacortes, first on the Southside and later in town.
After the death of her husband in 1987, Mary became involved with volunteer work at Christ Episcopal Church and the Senior Center.
Mary is survived by her brothers, David J. Seymour of Bellingham, WA and Charles E. Seymour, Jr. of Novato, CA and his children, Joyce and Rex Seymour; and her husband¡Çs two children, Allen M. Hunter, II of San Diego and Diane Hunter of Mission, KS; one grandson, Allen M. Hunter, III of San Diego, CA; nephew, Bruce Seymour of St. Louis, MO; and two grand-nieces, Krista Seymour of New York City and Leila Seymour of St. Louis, MO.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Christ Episcopal Church in Anacortes. Interment will be at Greenwood Memorial Park in Phoenix, AZ, next to her husband in the Hunter plot.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands.
