Martin Dick Van Slageren, age 76, passed away December 14, 2013 at his home.

Martin was born in Compton, CA. on September 10, 1937 the third of five children, born to Edna and Peter Van Slageren.

His formative years were spent on a dairy farm in Conway, WA. He attended Conway Elementary School.

Martin spent his life working on the waters and oceans of the Western World. At age 17, he joined the Navy and served four years based in San Diego. He worked as a boilerman aboard many Navy vessels. During the Vietnam era, Martin returned to Merchant Seaman work on firefighters cruising the waters between the Western United States and the Pacific Rim Countries. Most of his working life was spent as a commercial fisherman in Alaska and California. During the off season, Martin frequently worked for Skagit Valley farmers as a truck and/or tractor driver.

Martin was an avid reader, his memory of historical and political facts was phenomenal. Many times he used this factual knowledge to discuss and debate with anyon willing to listen at various local eateries and bars.

He was a member of the American Legion.

Martin is survived by his sister Libby (Leroy) Werkhoven of Sunnyside, WA; sister-in-law Beverly Van Slageren of Clear lake; sister-in-law Nicki Van Slageren of Arlington; step sister Janette (Larry) Lund of Mount Vernon; step brother Andrew (Patty) Jager, of Sumner; John (Lonnie) Jager of Everson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public funeral services.

Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, WA.
