Phillis Elaine (Thiel) Cole, age 91, passed away December 2, 2013 in Mount Vernon, WA.

She was born March 13, 1922 in Roundup, Montana to Leo and Elizabeth Thiel.

Phillis was one of 4 sisters (Helen Strickland of Seattle, Barbara Taylor of California, and Shirley Lange of Seattle. They moved to Seattle when their Dad worked as a telegrapher on the Rail Road. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle. Attended the University of Washington, Worked as a secretary at UW, Met Navy officer Norwood M. Cole from North Carolina and they married in Seattle in 1943.

Phillis loved to swim and read, was a member of the Methodist Women's Group, she joined a swim group of lifelong friends, a Coterie club that shared book reports and then she later enjoyed Red Hat Society. Was longtime fan of "Peanuts" and Snoopy. Phillis retired from work to raise a son, Peter and still helped her husband by typing manuscript for his Ed.D.

Phillis is survived by all 3 sisters and her beloved son, Peter and daughter-in-law, Beth from Lawrence, MA, as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norwood in 2000.

A Memorial for Phillis will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Division in Mount Vernon, Saturday, December 7th, 2013 at 1:00 pm. A reception in the church parlor will follow this service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Phillis' memory be made to the following: PBY Memorial, PO Box 941, Oak Harbor, WA 98277 (Norwood's plane is on display at the Seaplane Base). First United Methodist Church, 1607 E Division St., Mount Vernon, WA 98274. Skagit Valley College Foundation, 2405 East College Way Mount Vernon, WA 98273. Skagit Valley College is where Norwood taught and was President from 1947-1977

The family wishes to thank the staff at Mountain Glen where she most recently resided.
