HELEN HOOKER Obituary
Helen L. Hooker of Mount Vernon, died peacefully at Mt. Glen Retirement Home Saturday night, just 20 minutes before her 85th birthday. She was born to Clifford & Helen Challender in Jackson, MI, where she grew up with her 5 brothers.
Helen married her childhood sweetheart, Donald at age 17 in 1943 & lost him to cancer after 50 years of marriage.
During WWII, she worked at the Oldsmobile plant & later moved to Owosso, MI & became a self-employed beautician. In 1962, the family moved to Hawthorne, CA where she worked for Hughes Aircraft & retired after 22 years. In 1995, Helen moved to Mount Vernon to be with family & volunteered at Mount Vernon Senior Center for 10 years driving for Meals on Wheels.
Helen loved working in the garden, hers & anybody else's. She was very adventurous & loved "repairing" things. She was a loving grandmother who also enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, & canning for her many grandkids. Helen also enjoyed bingo, cards, tri-ominos, traveling & gambling with her many friends & family.
Helen is survived by her 3 children: Virginia Bevington of Torrance, CA, Susan O'Connor (Don) of Mount Vernon, WA, and Michael Hooker (Melissa) of Bayfield, CO. She also leaves 1 brother, Duane Challender (Peg) of Buena Park, CA. Helen had 9 grandchildren: Jimmy O'Connor (Karri), Shannon Kevorkian, Julia Ackley (Chris), Kimberly Bevington (Hutch), Dana Wyatt (Geoff), Mesha Marsh (John), Micah Hooker (Amy), A.J. Hooker, Shannon Miller (Brian). She also had 26 great-grandkids and 1 great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews & cousins.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Ernest, Donald, Wilford & Earl.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the very loving and caring staff and caretakers at Mt. Glen retirement home. We couldn't have taken any better care of her than they did.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson.org foundation at 1501 N.W. 9th Ave., Bob Hope Rd., Miami, FL 33136-1494.
A celebration of life will be held at the Mt. Vernon Senior Center at 1400 Cleveland Ave. on Feb. 4th at 3:30 p.m.

I love you Grandma...you will be greatly missed. I am so glad we did get to visit a short time ago...it is truly sad to know that it would be the last time :(
