JACK MOORE Obituary

Jack Moore, 90, of Burlington, passed away peacefully March 19, 2011. Jack was born September 25, 1920, in Tacoma, WA. He was the first child of John L. and Ann Moore.

Jack was raised in Bellingham, graduating from Bellingham High School in 1938. He attended Washington State University, leaving to join the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942. Jack proudly served his country during World War II aboard the USS E.W. Eberle, serving in both the European and South Pacific theaters. He recently reunited with a fellow shipmate while both were residents of Creekside Retirement Community.

Jack met Bernadette Rebholtz at a USO Club in San Francisco. They were married on July 14, 1946, and celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Jack worked as an auto mechanic and operated Moore's Used Cars in Bellingham from 1946 until he moved his family to Mount Vernon in 1957. He worked as a milk truck driver for Carnation and Carlson Bros. until his retirement in 1985. After his retirement, he enjoyed working as a night watchman at Summersun Nursery.

Jack was active with the Burlington American Legion Post for more than 37 years, making sure flags were placed at local cemeteries on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. He supervised weekly Bingo games at the Legion, helping to provide money for scholarships, Legion baseball teams, and other civic interests. He was also an avid fisherman, loved to work in his garden, and made sure his birdfeeders were always full for his feathered visitors.

Jack is survived by his son, Jim Moore and wife Patti of Bay View; his daughter, Susan Griffith and her husband Peter of Bay View; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Pat Boppel of Lynden, WA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadette Moore; and his sister, Betty Feathers.

A graveside military service will be held at Moles Greenacres Memorial Park, 5700 Northwest Drive, Ferndale, WA, on Monday, April 4, at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Burlington-Edison High School NJROTC Scholarship Fund, c/o Captain Butch Bailey, 301 N. Burlington Blvd, Burlington, WA 98233.

My condolences to Jack's family on his passing. Jack and my late husband Jim liked to visit at breakfast at the Cafe Burlington in recent years. Since they were both hard of hearing, and Jack spoke so softly it was almost impossible for anyone to hear him, their conversations consisted mostly of mumbles, un-huhs, and yeahs. But even though they couldn't hear each other, they shared a generation of memories and enjoyed each other's company on those mornings before Jim died 18 months ago. It was a sad day when those two old guys were no longer sitting together at the counter.
