Mildred "Millie" N. Anderson, 74, of Anacortes, died on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at her home in Anacortes.

She was born on July 26, 1935 in Bellingham, Washington, the daughter of Earl & Esther (Marriott) Menefee.

Millie married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) N. Anderson, in 1953 and shortly thereafter moved to Anacortes where they have lived in the same home for 48 years.

She became a beautician in the early 1960's and Bob converted half of his new garage into a beauty shop so she could open her own shop. A few years later Millie began working with two new beauty college graduates and before long Bob gave up the other half of his garage so that the business could expand. She bought the neighbors garage some time later to pay back Bob. As the business grew, Bob and Millie purchased a building downtown and opened Millie's Beauty, Barber and Boutique. Because Millie also enjoyed fashion and modeling she opened a dress shop in part of the beauty shop and because she loved evening wear called her shop "Millie's after Five". She became very active in the business community and mentored many new beauty college graduates who would eventually move on and open their own successful shops.

Millie also loved to cook and especially enjoyed cooking for parties and family holidays. Her chicken dumplings, potato salad, and the special macaroni and cheese that the grand-kids would beg for when visiting were enjoyed by many. After retirement she enjoyed making lunches for the boys that worked for her son Wes at WesPauls.

Millie and Bob also loved to travel with their friends and spend vacations with Vern and Marlene Burton. She also found time for acting and singing and because Millie and Bob were members of the Elks club they became active in the "Follies" that the club would put on year after year.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert N. Anderson.

Millie is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Duane Anderson of Arlington, WA, Larry & Karine Anderson of Mount Vernon, Wes & Rita Anderson of Bow, and Norman & Priscilla Anderson of Perris, CA; her mother, Esther Robertson; 3 grandsons, Robert, Justin and Brandon Anderson; 5 granddaughters, Carolyn, Nicole, Tracey, Melissa and Brooke; numerous great-grandchildren (the last one being born just 5 hours before she died); and a sister, Caroline.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Anacortes First Baptist Church, 2717 J Ave., Anacortes, WA.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel & Crematory of Anacortes.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Millie's name may be made to Skagit Hospice.
