RICHARD GREENING Obituary

His family mourns the loss of Richard (Dick) W. Greening, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a school teacher and administrator, a photographer of considerable skill, an outdoorsman, a music lover and trumpeter, a devoted friend to dogs, and the beloved husband of the late Avis Greening.

Born in Chicago, Ill, in 1923, Richard was a resident of Anacortes since 1990. He spent his retirement years in the Pacific Northwest pursuing his hobbies- gardening, canoeing, fishing and bridge. He passed away on April 3, 2011.

He is survived by five children, ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and his cherished German shepherd, Duke, who has been re-homed. He also leaves behind many hundreds of former students whose lives were enriched by his commitment to learning. For part of his career, he taught at a boarding school in Tucson, Ariz. One of his students from those days recalled, "He was a stern and comforting figure to a frightened boy far away from home. He was also a patient math teacher, and I didn't run into many of those."

A graveside service will be held April 23rd, 1:00 pm, at Grandview Cemetery in Anacortes.
