Frances J. Svornich, who was born and raised in Anacortes, passed away peacefully at Ashley Gardens in Mount Vernon on March 2, 2014. She was 93 years old.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born on July 25, 1920 to Frank and Clara (Gugich) Barcott, she was the third of five children.
Fran, as she was known by her friends and family, was proud of her Croatian heritage, her Catholic upbringing and being a lifetime Anacortes resident. She grew up on 15th Street along with numerous Croatian families, many working in the fishing business like her father.
Fran was a great story teller and often reminisced about the traditions passed on to her through music, dance and family gatherings. She loved to sing from an early age and prided herself in singing in Croatian.
Fran worked briefly at Fisherman's Pacific Corp. cannery in Anacortes and spent a few years in Seattle working for Kenworth Motors. She volunteered at Island Hospital for many years and enjoyed her interaction with the patients and staff. She was well known for her outgoing and energetic personality. In her life, there were no strangers, just people she hadn't yet met.
Fran met the love of her life, Dominick Svornich at a Halloween party and was married on January 31, 1959. They were devoted to each other and had 52 wonderful years together. Both were known for their culinary skills and entertaining parties.
Fran enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii and traveling to various destinations with Dominick.
Her hobbies included shopping for clothes, dancing, cooking, gardening and socializing with family and friends. She loved walking and visiting with her neighbors on her walks.
Fran was a charter member of the American Croatian Club of Anacortes and the Fidalgo Yacht Club. She danced with the original Vela Luka dancers and loved to perform. She was an active member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and was instrumental in planning many culinary events and preparing delicious dishes to serve. She loved attending mass and greeting her "family" parishioners with a smile and a hug.
She loved all children and in particular she loved sharing her home with her nieces and nephews while they were growing up. She was very kindhearted and was deeply saddened and affected by the early deaths of her nieces and nephews Marilyn Geer, Maggie Ezell, Robert Barcott, Mollie Barcott, Greg Barcott, and Kathi McDonald.
Fran was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Clara Barcott; husband, Dominick in 2011; and her brother, Frank Barcott.
She is survived by her sisters Mary McDonald and Catherine Foss; brother, Ed Barcott; sister-in-law, Sylvia Mowery; and numerous nephews and great-nephews, nieces and great-nieces, from both the Barcott and Svornich families.
She was especially close to her great-niece, Erin Moore and her children. The family is grateful to her nephew, Peter and wife, Cindy Mowery for taking Guardianship and managing Fran's financial affairs. The family would also like to give a special thank you to Fran's beloved friends, Jim and Jenny Toland and to Diane Greene, who was like a daughter to her.
