Alvin M. Rodahl, 97, passed away peacefully April 6, 2014 with his close family by his side.
The Guest Book is expired.
He was born to Alf & Martha Rodahl in Lemon Beach (now University Place, Tacoma) Washington February 1, 1917.
Al was raised in Tacoma along with his brother Einar and his sister Judy. Golf was Al's passion and was a part of his life since he was big enough to carry a bag and caddy. From a young age he caddied at Fircrest Golf and Country Club and while attending Stadium High School he lettered in golf three years in a row from 1934-1936. In 1936 Al won the 1936 Tacoma Caddy Tournament, of which he was very proud of.
Following his high school graduation in 1936, he went to work in a local molding mill and then the Tacoma shipyards. A few years after graduation he met, the love of his life, Wilma Curran. They were married in 1939 and in 1941 they welcomed their only child, LaVone Lee (Toni).
After working in the shipyards, Al had various construction jobs and he continued on building many custom homes on Mercer Island along with appraising homes for Fidelity Savings and Loan in Seattle. Al was known for his attention to detail and great eye for finish work. He later owned and operated North West Chemical in Seattle until retirement in 1982.
After retirement, he and Wilma moved to Mount Vernon to be close to their family. He and Wilma loved to be around their grandchildren and great grandchildren, attending events from dance recitals to baseball games. When entering the dance school for special dance performances he always did his signature dance move to impress everyone!
Al and Wilma loved to travel. They actually camped in the back of Al's blue work van and enjoyed those times but, Hawaii was their favorite, vacationing there over a dozen times throughout their life together. They also loved road trips to the Oregon Coast and day trips with picnics to Washington Park.
Al did not stop working after retirement, far from it! Some of the projects that Al worked on were the remodel of Ken Dally's Restaurant, the remodel of Riverside Health Club, trimming out boats at Petrezelka Brothers and Nelson Boats, a remodel of Trinity Lutheran Church, finish work on both granddaughter's homes, many jobs at Salem Lutheran Church, and he also helped with construction projects for many family members and friends.
Al and Wilma were very involved in their church and enjoyed the many special friends they met through the years. They had such a wonderful way of making everyone they met feel special and loved. They also had special long distance friends that they kept in touch with and cared for: Fran & Frank, Susie & Mike, Debbie & Creighton, and Kitty & Jim.
Al & Wilma were married for 72 years and were a shining example for their family and friends. Their love for each other showed in everything they did. How they always spoke kindly to each other, how they held hands, how they always kissed three times (I love you) when saying good morning or good night.
Alvin is survived by his daughter Toni Hulbert of Mount Vernon, grandchildren Krista (Jeff) Jewett of Sedro Woolley, Kelli (Steve) Perry Bow, great-grandchildren Cody and Audrey Jewett, Reed and Jenna Perry, along with a loving and supportive extended family.
Alvin is preceded in death by his wife Wilma Rodahl, his parents, his brother, and sister.
