Mr. Fred Boonstra 79, a long-time resident of the Skagit Valley passed away at home in Mount Vernon on Monday, August 4, 2014. He was born in Beets, Friesland, The Netherlands on May 5, 1935, the son of Oscar and Anna Boonstra. Fred immigrated to the United States, moving to Lynden with his family in 1948. He served four years with the US Army, serving a tour in Korea. Fred was married to Shirley Cuperus in Mount Vernon in 1960; they raised their family on the Dairy Farm north of Burlington that they started in 1964.

Fred was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church, serving on the church council many terms. He also served on the board of Mount Vernon Christian School. Since 1970, Fred was an active member of the Gideons.

Golfing with Shirley was a favorite pastime of Fred's. They spent many hours on golf courses in the area, but also loved to travel.

He is survived by his loving wife Shirley of the family home; one son, Jeff (Tera) Boonstra; and two daughters, Glenda (Brad) Gorter and Shari (Steve) Kramer; his grandchildren, Josh (Angela) Boonstra, Sean (Amy) Haahr, DeeAnna (LJ) Kilts, James Barney, Avery Gorter, Brianna Gorter, Cameron Gorter, David Gorter, Carvin Kramer and Davis (Emily) Kramer; great-grandchildren, Lyra, Judah and Hollyn Kramer, Payton Boonstra and one on the way. He is also survived by his brothers, Peter Boonstra and Herman (Eleanor) Boonstra; sisters, Joanne (Frank) Vogel, Janet Honcoop, Pauline Ray, Sandra (Loren) Harsch and Tres (Don) Kamphouse.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Andrew Boonstra; and grandson Chayce Kramer.

Graveside Service will be held at Hawthorne Lawn Cemetery in Mount Vernon on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 12:00pm, with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 pm at the First Christian Reformed Church on Blackburn in Mount Vernon.

Memorials are suggested to Mount Vernon Christian School or Gideons International.
