Leola Thurman Anderson, age 84, died Friday, June 24th, 2011 at her home in Mount Vernon, following a 10-year battle against cancer.

She was born July 2, 1926 to John and Addie Thurman of Bow. She graduated from Burlington-Edison High School in the class of 1944. She worked for several businesses doing clerical work, and then worked for Breathour Sheet Metal for 20 years as Secretary and Owner. She also worked for the Department of Social and Health Services for 4 years, and worked for Washington State Employment Security for 5 years. Leola retired in May 2004 at the age of 78.

There were many family fishing trips to Canada, horseback trips into the Cascade Mountains, boating in the San Juans, and family time spent in the Methow Valley. She also loved gardening, sewing, and crocheting. Leola enjoyed being with family and friends, and had a great sense of humor.

She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Anderson of Marysville, son J. Mark Anderson and Sue Danielson, daughter Karla and husband Terry Hill, and daughter-in-law Patti Woods Anderson, all of Mount Vernon; grandchildren Kari Pedroza of Lake Stevens, Kohl Anderson of Lacey, Keith and Kristin Hill of Mount Vernon, and Michael Anderson of Mount Vernon; great-grandsons, Kasey Pedroza of Spokane and Trevor Pedroza of Stanwood; sisters-in-law, Marlene Anderson Hirz of Moses Lake, Marion Anderson Mietchem of Lawton, OK, Dorothy Mahle Anderson of San Leandro, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Leola is survived by long-time friends Evelyn Youngquist (since 1st grade), Daralene Youngquist, Barb Weaver, Leanna Davis, and her loyal feline companion Simon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Ernest and Rolland Thurman of Burlington, her in-laws Carl and Hazel Anderson of Mount Vernon, brothers-in-law Don, Dwayne and Marvin Anderson, her ex-husband Vernon Anderson of Carlton, WA, her son Kraig Anderson of Mount Vernon; and two nephews Marsh Anderson and Jerry Johnson.

Per her request, there will be no formal service held. Cremation is under the direction of Hulbush Funeral Home and inurnment will be at Burlington Cemetery. A location for a celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.

Memorial donations can be sent to Hospice of the Northwest (formerly Skagit Hospice), or the Humane Society of Skagit Valley.
