Vernon Garfield "Smokey" Simmons, 86, passed away on September 25, 2012, at his home of 64 years in Big Lake.

He was born on March 11, 1926 in Merino, Colorado.

He served in the Army Air Corp for 3 years during World War II. As a young man he worked as a logger, then drove a cement truck for Concrete Nor'West for 36 years.

He married Reta Mae Chase on July 14, 1949.

He is preceded in death by infant son Steven, daughter Jeanie, his parents William and Dixie Simmons, brothers Norman, Eddie and Jack, and sisters Pat and Isabelle.

He is survived by wife Reta¸ son Michael (wife Kathi), daughter Shelley (husband Rob), grandson Ryan, who was always there for Grandpa, and took care of him in his final years, grandson Steven, granddaughter Luci, great grandsons Dante' and Rylee, and brother Jerry.

No services at his request. Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.
