Alan Robert Townsend moved to Skagit Valley with his wife Nickki and son, "Rick" in 1977 and he resided in Sedro-Woolley, Burlington and Mount Vernon since.

Alan was born September 6, 1946 in Warren, Minnesota and was later adopted by Donald Francis and Katherine Elizabeth Townsend (both deceased) and grew up in Contra Costa County, California.

Alan passed away at home in Mount Vernon on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.

Alan joined the U.S. Navy right after graduation from high school. He met and married his wife, Nickki Lynn Stoner, while he was stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in 1967. He was transferred to fight in the Viet Nam War on a river patrol boat. He was wounded during the Tet Offensive and returned home to Whidbey to greet his new born son Alan Richard Townsend. When Alan was released from the Navy the family moved to California. After eight years, they returned to Sedro-Woolley due to illnesses in Nickki's immediate family.

Alan was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Bellingham and he later worked at Employment Security in Mount Vernon. He joined the Burlington American Legion Post and later became the Post Commander. He was named Burlington's American Legion Veteran of the Year.

Alan is survived by his wife, Nickki; sons, "Rick" and Aaron of Mount Vernon; and his daughter, Katherine Baumgardner of Sedro-Woolley. He has seven grandchildren: Kristian, Isaac and Alyssa Townsend; Kyla, Kristina and Kobe Marsh and Kaitlynn Burris.

Memorial Service was held Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mount Vernon.
