Don was born on December 11, 1910 to Walter and Emma Equals in the small Idaho town of Payette.

He passed on April 7th in Burlington, WA at age 102.

Don graduated from Payette High School in 1928 then went to the University of Idaho in Moscow. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He graduated from the University in 1932 with degree in Business Administration.

In 1933 Don moved to Long Beach, California where he worked for Shell Oil Company and then Foster and Kleiser Advertising.

In 1937 he met and married Elizabeth (Mickey) Hurley. In 1939 they moved to Mount Vernon, WA where Don and his father bought and operated Equals Variety Store. During his years in retailing he and his business partner Fred Vochatzer established additional stores in Sedro Woolley and Burlington.

In the 1940s, Don and Elizabeth adopted two children, a daughter Ann and a son Robert (Bob).

In 1959, after selling the Variety Stores, Don joined First Federal Savings of Mount Vernon. Don established First Federal Offices in Stanwood, La Conner, Orcas Island, Burlington and Sedro Woolley.

In 1963, during his employment at Washington Federal, Don married Helen Mickelson. They built a home on Camano Island.

After Don retired as a Senior Vice President in 1974, he and Helen traveled abroad, especially in the South Pacific Islands and the Orient.

Over 50 years ago, Don was one of the first commissioners of Skagit Valley Hospital along with Rodney Olson and Walter Blade. He was very active with United Good Neighbors, now United Way, Rotary, and many other community projects. He served on the Stanwood School Board with great dedication towards providing the best educational opportunities for young students. He was a devout Christian and a long time member of First Evangelical Lutheran church.

Don was a man of many pastimes, including hunting, fishing, horseback riding, sports, travel and gardening. He enjoyed a variety of hobbies and embraced every opportunity to increase his knowledge about every topic imaginable.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Ann Morris, his wife Helen Equals, his daughter-in-law Diana Equals, his parents, one brother and one sister.

He is survived by his son Robert in Vancouver, WA, his granddaughter Kimberly Moore (Thomas) in Eagle Rock Alaska, his grandson Mike (Aurora) in Vancouver and great-granddaughters Nicole Moore and Anna Diana Equals. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was deeply loved and admired.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 14, 2013 3:00 pm at First Evangelical Church, 2015 E. Blackburn Rd, Mount Vernon.
