Herb Payne, 86, of La Conner, Washington, died in his home, at peace, in a beautiful setting that he loved very much. He was born in Mount Vernon, WA, on September 24, 1926 to Herbert and Mary (O'Leary) Payne, Sr. and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1944.

Upon Herb's graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he was assigned to the destroyer, USS MCCAFFERY as Radarman Seaman First Class.

After his service, he worked one winter at Sun Valley Lodge as a bell hop and enjoyed skiing on his free time. Herb then entered the University of Washington and graduated in 1953 with a degree in Business Administration. During that time, he spent two terms at Eastern Washington College of Education so he could play college baseball.

Herb married his wife, Grace Hawkins in 1959 in Tacoma, WA. They spent 27 years together in Eugene, OR, where they were actively involved in the community and raised their two children.

Herb worked for the Standard Oil Co., Bemis Co., and lastly as a financial advisor with First California Co. and ending with American Express. His service activities included Kiwanis and Toastmasters in Eugene, Skagit Conservation District and the Skagit Fisheries Enhancement group.

Herb enjoyed skiing, fishing, hunting, camping, any activity related to living on Puget Sound, travel, history and time spent with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Herb is survived by his wife Grace Ann, at the family home; son Steve H. Payne of Kelso, WA; daughter Susan A. Payne of Kodiak, AK; grandchildren, Will Ross Dumm and Wesley Ellery Dumm. He is also survived by his cousins, Janette McPherson of Mount Vernon, WA, Mary Henderson of Everett, WA, Fr. Jack O¡ÇLeary, S.J., of Seattle, WA, Fr. Patrick O'Leary, S.J., of Seattle, WA, Jerry O'Leary of Tacoma, WA, Isobel Englert of San Carlos, CA, and Kathleen Bash of New York City. NY.

Memorials in Herb's name may be made to the Fidalgo Pool and Fitness Center, Anacortes, or a worthy cause of your choice.
