DUANE DEMING Obituary

Duane Brock Deming, 66, of Federal Way, died of cancer on December, 17, 2013.

Born in Aberdeen in 1947 to Forest and Golda Deming, Duane grew up in Mt. Vernon and graduated from the U of W. He went on to work at a number of jobs over the years. He fought forest fires, planted trees, refined precious metals and even served a stint as an English teacher. After building his first house with only hand tools, Duane took up woodworking in his later years and became an accomplished woodworker. He was an avid runner and completed 6 Ironman triathlons, 3 in Hawaii, as well as numerous shorter races. He loved nature, especially Utah's Red Rock areas and traveling the world with his wife.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Bruce, his son Blake Deming (Heather Amburgy), daughter Alicia Erickson (Greg) and his granddaughters, Annika and Ava Erickson; and grandsons, August and Forest Deming.

We will forever miss having him in our lives.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fred Hutch, your favorite environmental organization or other charity of your choice.

A celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date.

My deep sympathy to Duane's family and friends. I went to High School in Mount Vernon with Duane and he was a friend.

I hadn't seen him since the seventies and did not realize how accomplished he was in so many areas. What an interesting man. His family must be very proud of him and I know he will be greatly missed. My husband died of cancer at age 57 several years ago so I know how hard it is. And he was so young. My heart goes out to you all along with my thoughts and prayers.

Thinking of you all right now, so saddened to hear the news. I have always been so proud to have Duane as my uncle and only wish we could've spent more time together. I have always looked up to him as an uncle, athlete and friend. What a fine man and the qualities he possessed will be forever missed. He was a true legacy of the Deming family reminding me always of "Hot Shot". He will be forever missed. All my love to you all, Nancy, Blake and Alicia!

Such a sad loss of such a wonderful person. It seemed that Duane was friends with everyone in the class of 1966 MVHS. I will never forget his kind heart and smiling face. He was at the 40 year Class Union Golf Tournament and I had lots of time to talk to him them. He was still as funny, exciting and adventurous as he always was, I'll never forget those conversations. He was in such good health in 2006, or it seemed so. Duane will truly be missed by all those that knew him. Many sympathies to all his family. He will always be around in heart and spirit Our last words were, "will see you at the next tournament" and we hugged as we parted. Our reunions will not be the same.

A great classmate going back all the way to 6th grade. Had a lot of laughs during our class reunions. He and I stood next to each other at grad 1966' We always joked that I got my diploma first. RIP.

So sad to hear the news. Duane was an old friend from the day's when we were young men. He was an inspiration of hard work and get it done personality.
My sincere thoughts go out to his love ones.

My sincere sympathies for his family and to those close to Duane.
I knew Duane from his time living in the upper Skagit during the 1970's. We fought a few forest fires together. I remember one night in Eastern Washington when he was the 'saw man' and for several hours blazed a fire line through a thick forest canopy, leaving a large crew literally running to catch up. An amazing performance from a very fine man.
RIP Duane

To Nancy and Duane's family...
I was so saddened to see Duane's obituary in today's Seattle Times.
I was 2 years older than Duane but sat next to him in French class at Mount Vernon High School.
He was so cute, so sweet and very funny... we had many laughs in that class. It's ironic that another high school friend and I had just mentioned him this past week.
I'll never forget him and am so sorry
for your loss.... he was a great guy as of course you know.

Sincerely,
gay brazas buck
