Edward J. Callahan, 67, of Ocala, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., Nov. 22, 1945, son of the late Edward John and Elizabeth Frances (Grimmer) Callahan.

Ed attended school in Buffalo, N.Y., and high school in Mesa, Ariz. In 1968 he met the love of his life at a college gathering and Ed married Patricia Eckert in her hometown of LaFargeville, N.Y., Aug. 30, 1969. In 1977 he earned his masters degree in education from State University College of Buffalo, N.Y. While attending college Ed worked summers on freighters in the Great Lakes and also as a travel agent with Niagara Frontier Travel Agency. Once he earned his degrees in the sciences he taught at Lancaster High School, N.Y. Following the "Blizzard of 1977" he and Pat moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where for the next five years he taught at the Adobe Mountain School for the Dept. of Corrections as a vocational teacher and also enjoyed renovating and selling real estate properties. Upon returning to Clayton, N.Y., and later LaFargeville, N.Y., in the early 1980's he became the director of the Planetarium and Nature Center at Wiley School, Watertown School District, N.Y.; retiring in 1989. He then became owner and operator of Ramblers Roost Boat and RV Storage, Clayton, N.Y. For many years Ed raised and trained his personal "companion samoyed dogs".
In 2000 Pat retired and they enjoyed traveling; settling in Ocala in 2006. He loved boating, fishing, woodworking, visiting with friends and quiet mornings reading the newspaper. Ed and Pat enjoyed their daily walks with their dog Snow Prince.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Pat; siblings, Betty Anderson and her husband, John of Maryland and John "Jack" Callahan of Boone, North Carolina; Pat's siblings, Peter Eckert and his wife RoseMary, Chris Eckert and his wife Diane, Ella Wilson and Tim Eckert; numerous nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews.
Pat will receive her family and friends for a celebration of life service Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at 4:30 p.m., with the service beginning at 5 p.m., in the TimberRidge Chapel of Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 9695 S.W. 110th St. Ocala, FL 34481. A second celebration of life service will be Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at 4:30 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1330 Gotham St. Watertown, NY 13601.
