James Robert Owens Obituary
Jim, 67, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Palomar Hospital in Escondido with his family at his bedside. Jim was born in Chicago, IL, on November 20, 1944, to Alex and Audrey (Dixon) Owens. In 1962 Jim joined the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1968 and continued to work for the Department of Defense for a total of 49 years. On June 8, 1985, after an eleven year courtship, he married Phyllis Lynn Bell and took her three children into his heart.
Jim is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, Jeff (Colleen) Holmes, Dianna Holmes and Brian Holmes; grandchildren, Matthew Flores, Jessica Holmes, Amanda Holmes and Justin Holmes; brother, Jerome (Pam) Owens; sister, Judy Johnson; uncle, Wilbur Dixon; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Audrey Owens.
Jim was best known for his selfless commitment to others through generous gifts of time and energy to all who needed it. He was the patriarch of the family and according to his grandson, Matthew, he fulfilled whatever role was needed. He recently told his oldest granddaughter, Jessica, who was concerned about taking up too much of his time, that he was a "24 hour Grandpa." Jim will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jim did not like to be fussed over and asked that we do not have a memorial service and that he be buried at sea. Family, friends and others whose lives have been touched by Jim are invited to attend an informal gathering at Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido, CA, on Friday, May 18, 2012, at 2 p.m.
