Leonard P. “Cal” Callan, First Sergeant (Ret) Obituary
Cal Callan, First Sergeant (retired), was promoted to his final duty assignment for the Creator and Chief on May 15, 2013, in Rancho Bernardo, California. He was born October 13, 1922, in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Cal joined the service in 1939 and was a decorated hero in both WWII and the Korean conflict. He was awarded the Geneva Convention Code of Conduct Medal and the Bronze Star; he was twice wounded in the line of duty. He then was promoted to the office of Recruiting Sergeant in Idaho Falls, Idaho, until his retirement. He then went on to be a successful real estate broker and developer. He was the director of the Idaho Falls Urban Renewal project. He retired a second time and moved to San Diego and bought a great house overlooking the golf course (the first house in the neighborhood) where he lived with his wife, Dorothy.
Dorothy passed away in 2010 and Wayne, his oldest son, passed away in 2011. He is survived by his son, Paul Callan, and his wife, D'Anna.
Cal touched the hearts of all he met and will be greatly missed. A gift he gave to all of us is one of his favorite sayings, "REMEMBER, A STRANGER IS A FRIEND YOU'VE NOT YET MET."
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at 1pm at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Poway. Interment will be June 6, 2013, at 11:30am at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery with full military honors.
