Carl Edward Piippo, age 92, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2018.
Carl was born in Madison, Wisconsin. As a young child his family relocated to Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
After he graduated from the local high school, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He served his country during WWII in the South Pacific from 1944-1946. Upon his return, he worked in various capacities for the government and Air Force as a civilian.
He also took on family responsibilities over the years, including taking care of his mother, doting on and tending to his wife and raising 2 daughters.
After his retirement, Carl devoted his time to his church and his wife. He loved the UP of Michigan and lived out the majority of his life in the Sault. Though, more recently, after his wife passed away, he relocated to the Grand Rapids, MI area to be closer to family in his senior years.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Piippo; daughter, Lyn Applebee; brothers, Ossian (Elizabeth) Piippo, Paul Piippo; sisters, Jean (Raymond) Weiss, Esther (Robert) Horton.
Carl is survived by his daughter, Laura (Norman Webster) Piippo M.D.; son-in-law, Michael Applebee; grandchildren, Courtney (John) Czernel, Benjamin Applebee, Katelyn Applebee; great-grandchildren, John and Jude.
A celebration of Carl's life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2018 at Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Drive N.E., Belmont, MI 49306. His family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Spastic Paraplegia Foundation, sp-foundation.org would be deeply appreciated.
