July 29, 1922 - Feb. 23, 2013
LAKESIDE - Violet "Maxine" Bailey, age 90, of Lakeside, MI, went home to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 23, 2013. Maxine was born July 29, 1922, in Culver, IN, to William and Mary Etta (Howell) Crossgrove, both of whom preceded her in death. Maxine married Robert Hall Bailey, the love of her life, her best friend and soulmate at the age of 20 in 1943. Together, Robert and Maxine had 16 children (blessings). Maxine is survived by her sons, Randy (Fran) Bailey of Knox, IN, and Douglas (Rita) Bailey of Kalamazoo, MI; daughters, Sharon (Lloyd) Miller of Kingsford Heights, IN, Lesley (Truman) Stepp of Portage, MI, Patricia (Dan) Combs of Three Oaks, MI, Christine (Mark) Veneklasen of Lakeside, MI, Janice (Rich) Brychta of New Buffalo, MI, and Tucson, AZ, Marcia (Peter) Rhode of New Buffalo, MI, Melody Bailey of Tuscon, AZ, Gloria Bailey of Lakeside, MI, Bobbi Freedman of Tucson, AZ, and Terri (Keith) Carlson of New Buffalo, MI; 30 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Iris Hyland of Culver, IN, Gloria Goble of Plymouth, IN, and Coleen (Buck) Hampshire; brother, William (Dee) Crossgrove of IN; numerous nieces and nephews. Maxine was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hall Bailey; children, Michael, Kent, Tina and Brian (twins), and Bailey; and grandsons, Gary Bailey and Rick Nelson. Maxine was a graduate of Culver High School in Culver, IN. Maxine loved working in her home and working with her husband in the garden and canning vegetables. She was a hard worker. She loved all who graced her back door, and had the gift of hospitality. Maxine enjoyed watching Dr. Billy Graham, Dr. Charles Stanley, Joyce Meyers, and "Everybody Loves Raymond." She played the piano and guitar. Maxine and her best friend, Mary Garrett, and sister, Iris Hyland, sang on the WLS Barn Dance Radio Show. She loved to collect antiques and enjoyed country music and the old Hymns of the Faith. Maxine truly bore the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Maxine was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her children nicknamed her "Saint Maxine" and called her the "Proverbs 31 Woman." She was a woman full of love and compassion, faith and patience. She will be greatly missed but we'll see her again in Heaven. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her and in knowing her, we knew that her most important relationship was with her Lord, Jesus Christ. Maxine had a unique gift of seeing all the colors of God. She was a rainbow of humility, love and strength. She had a hope that never failed, her hope was in God. We celebrate Maxine's passing, for she is finally home in Heaven. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Maxine's life on Friday, March 1, 2013, at 12 noon at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City, IN, with Pastor Kevin Galloway officiating, and soloist Peter Bailey. I remember Maxine from my very youngest years. Our family (Hanson) visited your family often. Mom and your Mom were cousins and friends from childhood years until my Mom died in 1998. When Bob & Maxine were dating, my Dad took Bob to Culver to see Maxine because Bob wasn't old enough to have a Driver's License. Then Maxine introduced my Dad and Mother. And, as they say "the rest is history". Maxine was always sweet and kind. She didn't have an easy life, but I don't think she ever complained. She loved her family and she loved the Lord. One of these days we will be with her again in Heaven. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the promise of life eternal with you. Love to the whole family, Cheryl Hanson

I will miss Aunt Maxine, but knowing that she is in Heaven, happy and whole and pain-free, reunited with loved ones who shared her faith in Jesus, brings comfort and peace, even joy.
To my cousins, I am sad for your loss.
Among my favorite memories are those few times shared with you and Aunt Max at Grandma Crossgrove's house in Culver.
With love,
