Aug. 13, 1932 - Dec. 26, 2012
SOUTH BEND - On August 13, 1932 a woman of excellence, Pinkie, was born to the late Christine and Booker Posely in Earl, Arkansas. On December 26, 2012, at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, our Heavenly Father called her home to eternal rest. Pinkie Posely was joined in holy matrimony to Waudell Newman in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1947. To that union four children were born, Debrah, Brenda, Glenda, and Wadell Jr. In 1952, with their first born, the family relocated to South Bend, IN to pursue a better life. Pinkie was a strong advocate for hard work and education. While continuing her post education, Pinkie was one of the first African American women to work at Milady Shop in downtown South Bend, all while raising her four children. She then began her career at Bendix where she retired after 30 years of dedicated service. Pinkie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at very young age. She lived her life until departure as a servant for the Lord. Pinkie was an active and faithful member of Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church for over half a century. She served in many capacities in the church including but not limited to, Sunday School Teacher, Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School, Drill Team, Children's Choir, and a member of the Nurse's Board. She also served as recording secretary for the Women's Home and Foreign Missionary for several years. One of Pinkie's favorite pastimes was traveling; she loved to visit different places and made a point to gather souvenirs at every destination she could. Pinkie played on the Bendix Bowling and Golf League where she won trophies in competitions for many years. Another great pride of hers was her grandchildren. She loved them dearly and was very active in their lives, keeping them heavily involved in church. Her grandchildren fondly referred to her by many names; whether it was Meme, Granny, Pankie, or Big Mama, she loved them all the same. Left to cherish her memory is a loving companion of many years, Gillom Works of South Bend, IN; 4 children, Debrah Jennings, Brenda (Jim) Sanders, Glenda Emerson, and Wadell (Felecia) Newman Jr. of South Bend, IN; and fourteen grandchildren: Marshall Emerson Jr., Joseph Jennings Jr., Craig Williams Jr., Latricia Emerson, Jameel Jennings, Christina Newman-Trotter, Terrance Newman, Catrina Newman, Robert Emerson, Marcus Emerson, Ch'Del Newman, Christopher Newman I, Matthew Emerson Sr., and Erich Newman all of South Bend, IN. Pinkie was blessed with 25 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends, especially Sis. Lucy Hiatt and Sis. Louis Bailey. Pinkie Newman-Works was preceded in death by her parents, Christine and Booker Posely; siblings, Carl Posely, Ernestine Ollie and Booker Posely; great-grandchild, Alaina Williams and close friend, Sis. Allene McMorris. Services For Mrs. Pinkie Newman-Works will be held Wed., January 2, 2013 in the Greater St. John M.B. Church, 101 N. Adams St., South Bend, IN. Visitation is 10:00 AM; Funeral Service is 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Please visit www.clarkoneal.com to sign the guest book. The Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
