SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Samella Walker, affectionately known as "Sam," 66, peacefully passed away at 5:50 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012 at her home in South Bend, Indiana, following a brief illness. Samella was born on August 18, 1946 in South Bend, to the union of Johnnie Louise Fox and Warren Kennedy, Sr.; they preceded her in death. She was a 1966 graduate of South Bend Central High School and attended Loyola University of Chicago Ill. On September 18, 1977 in South Bend, Samella was united in marriage to Walter Walker, III. In January of 2012, after 42 years of service, Samella retired from the A M General Corporation. She was a member of The Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church where she attended faithfully, and a member of several auxiliaries until a decline in health. Samella leaves to cherish her loving memories, her husband, Walter, at home; two sons, Walter Walker IV of Indianapolis, Indiana and Sean Walker; three grandchildren, Qwentin-Lee, Sereniti-Samella and Shadaya-Maria, all of South Bend; four sisters, Tempie Buckner of Muskegon, Michigan, Helen King of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Juanita Fuller and Renee E. Oneal, both of Houston, Texas; one brother, Warren Kennedy Jr. of South Bend; a sister-in-law, Minnie Franklin of South Bend; & a brother-in-law, Brent (and Marian) Walker of Granger, Indiana, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Samella was preceded in death by one brother, David-Lee Kennedy, her mother and father-in-law, Addie and Walter Walker, II, three sisters-in-law, Patricia Austin, Brenda Walker and Rosa Johnson, and one brother-in-law, Kevin Walker. Samella enjoyed shopping around for bargains, exchanging recipes and cooking, traveling, spending time with her friends, but most of all taking care of her family. Sam was a genuinely nice person. She always smiled and had kind and encouraging words for everyone she spoke to. If you had a problem and you talked to Sam about it, she'd always say, "I'm going to pray for you and you will see, God is going to make it alright." She will be greatly missed by those who loved and knew her. Services for Mrs. Samella Walker will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 in the Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams St., South Bend, Indiana. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and funeral services will begin at 12 noon. Burial will follow funeral service at Highland Cemetery. I HAVE KNOWN SAMELLA FOR QUITE SOMETIME, AS WE BOTH GREW AND MATURED OUT OF THE SAME GENERATION; LIKEWISE, I KNEW HER HUSBAND, WALTER, OUT OF THAT SAME GENERATION, PRIMARILY AS MUSICIAN FRIENDS, DURING OUR YOUNGER DAYS.

ALL I CAN SAY IS, "WOW, WHAT A GREAT PERSONALITY AND SMILE' OF WHICH I WILL NOT SOON FORGET; OVER THE YEARS, I HAVE KNOWN MANY MEMBERS OF HER FAMILY (ESPECIALLY HER SONS WALTER AND SEAN)! MAY THE PEACE OF GOD THAT SURPASSESS ALL UNDERSTANDING, KEEP YOU WALTER JR. AND ALL THE WALKERS AND KENNEDYS IN PERFECT PEACE, AT SUCH A TIME AS THIS. MAURICE MILLER/ INDIANAPOLIS, IN.

May you rest in peace my friend. I will always remember the good times we had growing up in South Bend. Even when I returned in 2007, you were still the same smiling person, helping others, and still beautiful. I never told you how much I appreciate the love and care you showed to my Aunt Thelma Muldrow before her death. Didn't know until now that we were both born on August 18. Rest In Peace my Sister!

Sometimes in life we meet that person who always leaves us with a smile. Truly Sam was that kind of person.I don't think Sam ever met a stranger. Sam was a real class act, sista girl, a true friend who possessed a heart of gold. Her presence will be greatly missed but always felt by those whose lives she touched.

I was blessed to have worked with Sam at AM General for 30 years. She was a friend and a true prayer warrior. She always asked about my son and was as excited for me as my own mom when I found I was to be a grandma. We shared many recipes and Bible verses over the years as well as a few prayers. She was right when she said that God will make everything alright. My prayers are with you and your families during this very sad time. The angels are rejoicing as one of their very best angels has returned home.

Condolences and prayers from the Simpson Family to the family of Mrs. Walker. Your mother, your sister, your wife, Mrs. Walker supported my son- Brandon. As all mothers do we pray for our children's protection and we pray that God will place believers in their life journey. Just a few days ago I found out that you served as an agent of God in my son's life. I thank God for your life. I pray that memories of your love, your devotion will comfort your children. Your life here on earth was an example. Now we praise God for your eternal life in the secure arms of Jesus.

I have only spoken with Samella via telephone over 3,000 miles away, have never seen her in person until this obituary picture, but when my Mother, Emma Buchanon who moved from South Bend to California was sick, I had the pleasure of speaking with Samella. She called several times and sent many get well cards to her. I knew she had to be a special caring person to go out of her way so many times just to inquire about my Mom. My heartfelt prayers are extended across the miles to her family and may God give you strength as you endure your great loss.

My "Sista" Samella,
If I lose my life, I will find again
I will soar on eagle's wings and then
Ever cease from war, rest in Jesus arms
For the Lord, He's good and you're safe from harm.

It's the Lord that gives, heard the prophets say
and I will bless His name, though he takes away
I will trust, not fear, naught to be alarmed
For the Lord, Hes good and you're safe from harm

You're safe, you're safe
in the eye of the storm, there's calm
For the Lord He's good
your soul is safe from harm.

I will always cherish the phone calls and words of encouragement that meant so much to me. Much love my "Sista"

The Kennedy family was some of the first families I remember dating back to the mid to late 50'S. I started Oliver school with the late David Kennedy in the late 50'S. I've known Samella at least that long. I've always known her to be a dignified, respectful, physically beautiful lady who was beyond anything petty. I don't think I know her spouce but she married him so He's got to be alright. My deepest sorrow and prayer go out to the Walker and Kennedy family.

To Walter, Little Walter and Sean, you all know how much I loved my dear friend Sam. My heart aches knowing she is now gone from our midst. I will greatly miss her but will always carry her memory in my heart. I promised Sam I'd keep in touch with her babies, and that you can count on. Let's continue to pray one for another and know, as Sam would say, "God is going to make it alright." Love you all.
