Rita Jun Obituary

Aug. 17, 1923 - Jan. 31, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Rita J. Jun, 89, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, January 31, 2013. Rita was born August 17, 1923, in South Bend to Frank L. & Mary (Skielka) Lewandowski. Rita is survived by her loving husband, Donald L. Jun. Also surviving are three daughters, Kathleen Jun (Raymond Magyar) of Dallas, Texas, Cheryl (David) Jeffers of Orlando, Florida, and Michelle M. (David) Remley of South Bend, Indiana; one son, Richard A. (Carmen) Jun of South Bend, Indiana, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. A sister, Lucinda Whitfield, preceded her in death. A loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Rita was a South Bend resident all her life. She graduated from Holy Cross Grade School in 1937 and St. Mary's Academy in 1941. She attended South Bend College of Commerce and pledged Nu Phi Mu Sorority. She married Ensign Donald Jun on May 26, 1945, and traveled with him to St. Simon's Island Naval Facility in Georgia and other naval facilities on the East Coast. Rita was a member of Holy Cross and Corpus Christi parishes. She was a longtime member of the Christ Child Society, where she lovingly created layettes and made more than 100 angel layettes for deceased babies in area hospitals. She enjoyed sewing for her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She made dresses, "busy books," Christmas stockings and ornaments, and created annually an entire wardrobe for a Barbie Doll for St. Vincent de Paul's Christmas drive. Rita enjoyed playing bridge with friends. She loved being outside with her flowers. She worked outside the home; her last job was in the Children's Room of the St. Joseph County Public Library. Visitation for Rita will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, February 3, 2013, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013, in Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Child Society or Center for Hospice Care (Sunnybrook). Don, I am so sorry for you and your family's loss. I'm kind of under the weather and don't want to come around feeling like this, so please forgive me for not being at the visitation. She was a lovely lady and I'm sure she will be missed. You take care of yourself and know that she's at peace.

I remember Mrs. Jun as a good lady who always had it together. Memories on Prast Blvd and Elmer St. will always be with me. Those days are part of who I am.
