Emmert, Vivian A.
Vivian A. Emmert July 31, 1923 - July 26, 2016 MISHAWAKA - Vivian Arlene Gillen Emmert passed away on July 26, 2016, at North Woods Village Assisted Living Home in Mishawaka, Indiana. Vivian was born in Mishawaka on July 31, 1923, to the late Lawrence and Nina (Higgs) Gillen. She was one of four children, two of whom died shortly after birth. Her brother Robert passed away in 1990. A graduate of Mishawaka High School, she was a homemaker with three children, Constance (Jerry) Chaplin of Osceola, Alan (Marty) Emmert of Mishawaka, and Paul (Sharon) Emmert of Granger, all of whom survive her. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and last year welcomed a great-great-granddaughter, making it five generations. Vivian was fortunate to have been loved dearly by the two men in her life. The first was her husband of 63 years, Leonard Emmert, who preceded her in death on June 14, 2005. For the past decade, her constant companion and caregiver was Keith Freese. He was with her every day at North Woods tending to her every need, and we are forever grateful. We are also very grateful to the entire staff of North Woods Village for their compassionate care of her and the family over the past several years. Vivian was the “senior” resident at NWV, as she moved in shortly after they opened. Although her verbal skills were limited, she loved to greet everyone with her lovely smile. Also, a huge thank you to Heartland Hospice for meeting every need, both physical and emotional. We would not have had our loved one with us for this “long goodbye” without these organization's invaluable help. Vivian was a lifetime member of First Christian Church in Mishawaka. She attended there when it was located in what is now Vogue Beauty College. The members of the church have remembered her with cards and notes of encouragement during her illness, which was much appreciated. Vivian's legacies to her family are at least a half a dozen beautiful, handmade quilts of various designs. Also, innumerable crocheted, knit, embroidered and many other handcrafted pieces are left to be treasured. She spent most evenings working on needlework until arthritis in her hands made it too difficult. Thanks Mom. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2016, (her 93rd birthday) from 2 until 4:00 PM in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. Funeral services to honor her life will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 1, 2016, at 1:00 PM, with one hour visitation prior to the services. Burial will follow the service at the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, 922 E. Colfax Ave., South Bend, Indiana 46617.
