Michael Sacchini Nov. 18, 1916 - May 19, 2015 SOUTH BEND - Michael Sacchini, 98, of South Bend, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, peacefully with his son at his side. He was born on November 18, 1916, in Logansport, IN, to the late Pasquale and Matilda (Frisoni) Sacchini. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia Henry and Carolyn "Snookie" Ehlert; four sisters and five brothers. Michael is survived by his son, Michael (Barb) Sacchini of South Bend; three grandchildren, Dr. Tara (Tony) Svatos of Granger, Daniel (Dea) Sacchini of Spring, TX, and Erik Hurwick of Indianapolis, IN; a son-in-law, Larry Ehlert of Naples, FL; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Firmani, and sister-in-law, Maxine Shivley, both of Logansport, IN; four great-grandchildren, Helen and Michael Svatos and Christian and Alexis Sacchini; his former wife, Helen Shivley; a very dear friend, Marguertie Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews. Michael served with the Civilian Conservation Corps when he was a young man and helped build the Pokagon State Park. He loved his family, enjoyed going to Notre Dame football games and loved golf. He was a quiet, polite, loving and caring man, who had a healthy and happy life. Everyone loved him and may he rest in peace! A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 pm Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Sandra K. Schiele Sept. 13, 1945 - May 18, 2015 NILES - Please note the following corrections to the day of service published in yesterday's South Bend Tribune. It inadvertently listed the day of service as Thursday, May 28, 2015. The correct day is Thursday, May 21, 2015. Sandra K. Schiele, 69, of Niles, died Monday, May 18, 2015. The South Bend native was born September 13, 1945, to Hubert O. & Minnie L. (Petrie) Cates, who have both preceded her in death. She retired from Notre Dame in Alumni Files after 24 years there; she enjoyed crochet & cooking, playing video games and spending time with her family & grandchildren. Sandra is survived by her son, Roger (Stephanie) Schiele, and her grandchildren, Zachary & Alexander Schiele, all of Mishawaka. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015, from 5-8 pm in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. Interment at a later date at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Lawrence H. Searer Feb. 28, 1929 - Feb. 2, 2015 JONES - Lawrence Harvey Searer, age 85, of Jones, died peacefully Monday afternoon, February 2, 2015, in Fairview Living Centre, Centreville. He was born February 28, 1929, in Jones, Michigan, to Orlando and Florence (Withers) Searer. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Norman Searer; two half sisters, Bernice Cox and Vena Trout; and one half brother, Nolan Searer. Larry loved to play bingo, and liked to hunt and fish. Lawrence will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by one sister, Genevieve Millard of Mendon, Michigan, and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will gather Saturday, May 30, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the Graveside in Poe Cemetery in Newberg Township, where Mr. Searer's remains will be laid to rest next to his brother, Norman Searer. In recognition of the excellent care that was extended to Lawrence, the family prefers that memorial contributions be made in his name to Fairview Living Centre, 441 East Main Street, Centreville, Michigan 49032. J. Willard Simcox May 23, 1915 - May 16, 2015 LAPORTE - J. Willard Simcox, 99, of LaPorte, Indiana went to be with the Lord at 7:45 AM, May 16, 2015, one week short of his 100th birthday. He was born to the late Rose Catherine (Cox) Simcox and Jesse Francis Simcox on May 23, 1915 in LaPorte. On May 23, 1938, he married Rachel Louisa Gibbs at the First United Methodist Church, River Park in South Bend, IN, then to Genevieve Kimmel at the Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church February of 1991, both of whom predeceased him. A lifelong native of LaPorte County, Willard was involved in a great many professional, civic, and political activities. Over the course of his working life, Willard's entrepreneurial spirit led him to participate in many and varied endeavors. He was a licensed real estate broker, a real estate developer, and a retail dealer of farm and industrial machinery and equipment, including the Allis Chalmers, Ford, and New Holland lines under the name Simcox & Son. He was also part owner of a Hudson automobile dealership in Michigan City, IN. In addition, he sold securities, served as district sales manager of Willys Overland, Toledo, OH, as a grower and marketer of Christmas trees, as the administrative assistant for the State Highway Commission, LaPorte District, as a school bus safety trainer and inspector for the Indiana Department of Education, and as the operator of the LaPorte County Motor Vehicle License Branches. Willard was a leader in local and state political circles, having served as a volunteer for the LaPorte County Republican Party, eight years as LaPorte County Republican Chairman, and six years as the Third Congressional District Republican Chairman. His civic activities included service as an officer and board member of the Pine Lake Cemetery Board, LaPorte, the Rolling Prairie School Board, the Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church Board of Trustees, and the LaPorte County Board of Health. Other fraternal affiliations included the LaPorte Elks Club, over 65 years as a member of the Excelsior Masonic Lodge of LaPorte, the Scottish Rite and Orak Shrine, and a 69 year member and past president of the LaPorte Rotary Club which designated him as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was honored by Indiana Governors Whitcomb, Bowen, Orr, and Pence with the designation of Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor bestowed by a governor on a citizen of the state. Additionally, Governor Mitch Daniels conferred the Distinguished Hoosier Award on him. He was a 1934 graduate of Rolling Prairie High School, Rolling Prairie, IN and a member of the Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church for over 75 years. Willard was an avid sportsman and Chicago Cubs Fan. He also loved to golf and spend time with family. He was preceded in death by brothers, Norman and Arnold Simcox, and grandson, Matthew Feltman. He is survived by daughter, Sheila (Bernie) Jastrzembski of Granger, IN, son, Edwin J. Simcox (Sandra) of Fishers, IN and stepdaughter, Margo (Joe) Brown of LaPorte. Also surviving are grandchildren, Lori Risser of South Bend, IN, Nathan Feltman of Carmel, IN, Ed Simcox Jr. and Ethan Simcox of Indianapolis, and Stephen Simcox of Dallas, TX, two step-grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Friends may call on Tuesday, May 19, 4-7 PM at Haverstock Funeral Home in LaPorte. Visitation will also be held at the Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church, 3444 E. U.S. Highway 20, Rolling Prairie, at 10 AM on Wednesday, May 20, with a funeral service to follow at 11 AM at the church. Burial will be at Pine Lake Cemetery in LaPorte. The Simcox family would like to offer their sincere gratitude to the staff of Brentwood Assisted Living for the outstanding care they provided. Paul D. Slusser Oct. 3, 1956 - May 12, 2015 OSCEOLA - Paul D. Slusser, 58, of Osceola, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015. The South Bend native was born October 3, 1956, to Dallas & Louise (Osos) Slusser. Paul graduated from LaSalle High School with the Class of '75; he worked as a plumber & pipefitter. "An avid outdoorsman and hunter, equally deadly with a bow or gun. We are all a bit upset he took his best mushrooming spots with him. Beagle breeder and trainer, good hunting partner, a great brother and powered parachute pilot; a man of principal and conviction. He could spin a good yarn and loved a good joke; he will be sorely missed". In addition to his parents, Paul was also preceded in death by his sister, Eileen M. Slusser. Survivors include his stepson, Kraig Archibald of Middlebury; brothers, John (Connie) Slusser of South Bend and Roger (Cherie) Slusser of Largo, FL; his sisters, Mary (Greg) Batlis of Osceola, Jane Smith of Bremen and Sue (Brian) White of Crown Point; and several nieces & nephews. Arkisha Smith July 13, 1973 - May 15, 2015 SOUTH BEND - Arkisha D. Smith, 41, of Toledo, OH, formerly of South Bend, IN, was called to rest on May 15, 2015. She was born on July 13, 1973, in South Bend, IN, to Joan Smith and Samuel Lake. She accepted Christ at an early age. She was born and raised in South Bend, IN, but moved to Toledo, OH, at the age of 20. She moved to Toledo to start a new life and raise her children. In her spare time, she loved to spend it with her grandchildren--Tink, Buggs, and Mimi--whom she loved dearly. She loved to cook for her family and tell jokes. Arkisha leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters, Arshayla Smith and Treyonna Smith, both of Toledo, OH; three grandchildren--Javaar Winters, Anthony Burroughs III, and Jamyia Smith, all of Toledo, OH; and two sisters, Arkeena Smith of South Bend, IN, and Arkendra Smith of Indianapolis, IN. Two brothers, Tyrone Lake of Toledo, OH, and Troy Lake of South Bend, IN, her grandmother, Sally Lake of South Bend, IN, and a special aunt, Yolanda Lott of South Bend, IN, a very special friend, Charles Cross, and her two best friends, Chanise Jackson and Terry Burnett, and a host of aunts, cousins, uncles, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Samuel Lake, mother, Joan Smith, grandmother, Pearl Smith, grandfathers, Moses Smith Sr. and Curtis Lake Sr., sister, Takese Lake, uncles, Bill Cross, Curtis Lake, and Moses Smith Jr, her aunt Beverly Lake, and a special cousin, Shaquindra "Quin" Martin. "Miss me but let me go, for this is a journey we all must take and each must go alone, its all part of the master plan, a step on the road to home." F. Eva Stickley Nov. 22, 1926 - May 21, 2015 WALKERTON - F. Eva Stickley, 88, passed away in Millers Merry Manor, Walkerton, on Thursday, May 21, 2015. Mrs. Stickley was born November 22, 1926 in Ray, ND to Archie and Lydia (Hartsock) LaBere and lived in the area most of her life. On October 20, 1946, in Walkerton, IN, she was married to Clyde Stickley, who preceded her in 2008. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter; and six brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Geraldine (Rick) Ruby of Walkerton and Nancy (Tom) Bolze of Walkerton; seven grandchildren, including two sets of twins; and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stickley was a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Better Homes Extension Club of Walkerton. She was a cook at the PLJ/John Glenn Schools for 25 years. She was a square dancer in area clubs her entire life and she enjoyed sewing and baking for family and friends, especially her cinnamon rolls and homemade noodles. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) at the Walkerton United Methodist Church with Rev. Perry Richards officiating. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton. Friends may visit at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. ET. Susan Marie Stineback Nov. 14, 1961 - May 21, 2015 BUCHANAN - Sue Stineback, 53, of Buchanan, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2015, at her home. Sue was born on November 14, 1961, to the late Robert and Joan Stineback in South Bend, IN. Sue enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, such as crocheting, playing Scrabble, fishing, and enjoying her friends' and family's company. She was a warm, caring and loyal woman, who had room in her heart for everyone, and always something funny to say about everything. The only thing she loved more than her country was her family. Sue is survived by her children, Bob (Sarah) Banaszak & Lindsey (Steven Benjamin) Collard; brothers, Russell, Frank and Jim Stineback; her grandchildren, Zachary, Mackenzie and Caitlyn Banaszak and Averie Benjamin; as well as the many extended family members she had adopted throughout the years. Sue was preceded in death by her parents. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 6 pm (EST) on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, where memories and stories will be shared about the many ways Sue had touched our lives.
