SOUTH BEND - Arnold E. (Gene) Bennett, 86, of Granger, formerly of South Bend, passed away at 8:45 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19th with family at his side, after an extended illness. Gene was born on August 19, 1926 in Anderson, IN, and resided in the Michiana area since coming from Anderson in 1954. Mr. Bennett was married to the former Josephine Dunning, who preceded him in death in August 2008. He is survived by three daughters, Barbara J. (John) Vogt of Granger, Linda J. Eckenberger of Mishawaka and Martha Jean (Kim) Johnson of Brownsburg, IN, and by one son, Larry E. (Jane) Bennett of South Bend. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, two sisters, Mary Dean and Maxine McKain, and by two brothers, James T. and Jack Bennett. Mr. Bennett joined the South Bend Police Department in 1954 and retired in 1974 as a Detective Sergeant in the Investigative Division. Gene was a U.S. Navy
veteran, having served in WW II and the Korean Conflict
. He was stationed on the USS Solomon as a gunner's mate. He was proud to have served this great country, as we were proud of him and all the other men and women who served with him. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and all who had the opportunity to know him during his life journey. Mr. Bennett was a member of the South Bend Police FOP Lodge 36. He loved fishing, singing, and playing several musical instruments. His wishes were to be cremated, which his loving family honored. There will be no visitation or services at this time.
