Carl J. Zwierzynski

SOUTH BEND - Carl J. Zwierzynski, 78, of South Bend, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, in Cardinal Nursing Home, South Bend. Carl was born on March 14, 1935, in South Bend, to the late Sylvester and Violet (Ciesiolka) Zwierzynski. He married Joan Switalski on June 9, 1956; she preceded him in death on February 21, 2013. Surviving are his daughter, Tamela of South Bend; his son, Joseph (Catherine); three grandchildren, Jacob (Brittanie) of Michigan City, IN, Adam of South Bend and Caleb (Kassandra) of South Bend; and by five great-grandchildren, Avary, Autumn, Viviana, Giuliana and Gianni. Also surviving is his sister, Patricia (Ronald) Malecki of Jackson, WI. Carl was a Firefighter with the South Bend Fire Department for 32 years, before retiring in June of 1993. He was the former president of the Firefighters Local Union #362 and a former assistant fire chief. He then took the position of St. Joseph County Emergency Manager from 1993 to 1997. He was a Naval Reservist, a member of the Indiana Firefighters Association and the International Association of Firefighters. Carl's life was dedicated to his loving wife, family and friends. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and golfing at Blackthorn Golf Club, where he worked for the last 20 years. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm today, October 24, 2013, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Friday, October 25, 2013, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family would like to thank Cardinal Nursing Home for their wonderful care of Carl and Joan. Also a sincere thanks to the Center for Hospice Care.
