Dorothy Ann Getzinger

MISHAWAKA - Dorothy Ann Getzinger, 97, of Mishawaka, passed away on October 15, 2013, after a brief illness. She was surrounded in love by her daughter and granddaughters. Dorothy was born in Rochester, Indiana, on July 11, 1916, to Billy Ray and Margaret Gordon. She grew up in LaPorte and South Bend, Indiana. At the age of 14 she started dancing professionally with an all-girl orchestra under the name of Bobby Knight. She danced in nightclubs in Chicago, Michigan City, LaPorte and South Bend. She was Miss National Recovery Administration in 1933, and in 1936 was 2nd runner up for the Miss LaPorte Bathing Beauty Contest. She graduated from Saint Joseph Academy in 1934. In 1938 she married the love of her life, Hubert Getzinger, and together they raised their two children in South Bend, Indiana. Together as a family they built their lake house on Birch Lake in Vandalia, Michigan, where many happy memories were created. Dorothy was active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship as a youth group leader, a Boy Scout den mother, and a troop leader for Campfire Girls. She worked on many charitable activities and held all of the chapter offices as well as national offices as a member of the Tau Chapter of Beta Chi. Dorothy was a mother figure to many and was lovingly called Nanny by her grandchildren. She instilled a joy of life, a positive attitude and daily reminded us that everything happens for the best. She was a strong woman who loved life until the end. As a 22-year breast cancer survivor, Nanny was a daily reminder that we can all overcome our obstacles. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Hubert Getzinger, her son, David Getzinger, and her great-grandson, Tyler Michael Rossi. She is survived by her daughter, Gail Schutt of Mishawaka; her six grandchildren, Lisa (Michael) Rossi of Fort Collins, CO, Shannon (Eric) Overmyer of Mishawaka, Sherry (Bill) Halleman, Jim (Margo) Schutt, Kirk Hillyard, and Kevin (Ginger) Hillyard; her great-grandchildren, Cody (Brittany) Rossi, Christopher Rossi, Elizabeth Rossi, Blake Overmyer, Grace Overmyer, Amber (Chas) Grundy, Heather Halleman, Nicole Halleman, Emily Schutt, Charley Schutt, Kayleigh Hillyard and Gillian Hillyard; and her great-great grandchildren, Camden Rossi, Harlow Rossi, Avery Grundy and Elyse Grundy. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, October 18, 2013, at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Rev. Michael Butler, pastor of River Park United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Indiana.
