MISHAWAKA - Esther P. Lavengood, 77, of Mishawaka, passed away on Tuesday, May 14th in the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center of Mishawaka. Esther was born in Champaign, Illinois on December 2, 1935 to the late Leonard and Dema (Brown) Pittman. On December 16, 1956 she married M. Wayne Lavengood in Champaign, Illinois. She has been a member of the Willow Creek United Methodist Church since 1965; she was also a member of United Methodist Women's Group. Esther retired as Nursing Supervisor from the former St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka in 1993. Esther was blessed with a servant's heart. She was actively involved well into her retirement with all of the Church's activities, Rhythm of Grace Concerts and serving numerous meals throughout her years of service. Esther worked with her husband, Wayne, on Homes for Habitat for Humanity; and Medical Relief for mission trips to Guatemala. She assisted in Mississippi with rebuilding homes after Hurricane Katrina. In the 70's she served as a Girl Scout Leader for several years. Esther is survived by her husband, M. Wayne Lavengood of Mishawaka, and their three children: Jim (Cora) Lavengood of Osceola, Cheryl Lavengood and Tom Lavengood both of Mishawaka. She was a grandmother of five: Sarah (Daniel) Gryp, Rebecca, Joshua, Isabel, and Taylor Lavengood: and a great-grandmother of one, Logan Gryp. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Scarlet Lavengood in 1976, along with two brothers, Gene Payne and Fred Pittman. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, May 20th from noon until service time in the Willow Creek United Methodist Church at the corner of Capital Ave. and Jefferson Hwy. A service celebrating Esther's life will be held at 1:00 pm in the church with Pastor Milt Gould officiating.
