Frances E. Probst-Shearer


April 7, 1928 - Feb. 7, 2014 NOTRE DAME - The Lord has welcomed home Frances E. Probst-Shearer, 85, resident at Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame. Fran passed away February 7, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 7, 1928, in South Bend, IN, to the late Dr. Edgar and Marie (Kerr) Cain, and lived all of her life in the South Bend area. Fran married Joseph L. Probst, who preceded her in death in 1977. She later married John J. Shearer, who preceded in 1991. She was also preceded by infant son, Tommy, two sisters, Liz Riffle and Mary Cain, and grandson, Michael Fegel. Fran is survived by daughters, Mary Kay (Larry) Fegel of Holland, MI, Patty (Bud) Hornbeck of Naples, FL, and Peg (Bruce Holmstrom) Maupin of Austin, TX; sons, Mike (Rachel) Probst of Mishawaka, Bill (Gina) Probst of Granger and Joe (Letty) Probst of Mishawaka; stepdaughters, Debbie (Bob) Rosenfeld and Annie (Joe) Solfronk, both of Granger, and Susie Shearer of Ohio; stepsons, Thomas (Susan) Shearer of Mishawaka, Bill (Vicki) Shearer of Vicksburg, MI, and Patrick (Mary Beth) Shearer of Allen Park, MI; twenty-eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Patricia (Thomas) Murray of Niles, Charlotte Lawton of South Bend and Kathleen Lawton of Mishawaka; as well as a brother, James (Priscilla) Cain of Hamilton, Montana; and many loving nieces and nephews. Fran graduated from Niles High School and attended St. Mary's College. She worked for many years as Secretary to the Dean of Arts & Science, and the Director of Labor Relations at Indiana University South Bend. She was a lector and member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, and was a longtime volunteer with the Christ Child Society and Center for Hospice Care, as well as a reading tutor for children. Her life revolved around her family and friends who loved her deeply. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 Thursday, February 13th, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, IN. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Visitation will be held at the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, Wednesday, February 12th, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm, with a Rosary to follow at 7:00 pm. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to Mass on Thursday in the church. Special thanks to the Senior One caregivers (particularly Precious & Jill) for the loving care they provided to Fran over this past year. Fran's family would like to also thank Dr. Gail English and the Center for Hospice team (especially Kristina, Paula and Trevor) for their loving support and guidance throughout this time. Fran touched and enriched the life of everyone with whom she had contact. Her legacy of love will live on.
