Francis S. Amussen

SOUTH BEND - Francis S. Amussen, 85, residing in South Bend, passed away at 2:50 am Thursday, August 1, 2013 in Hospice House. He was born in Logan, Utah on November 10, 1927 to the late Charles S. and Odetta (Salzner) Amussen, and has lived in South Bend since 1965. On September 12, 1951 in Logan, Utah, Francis married the former Ruth Anhder, who survives. In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by daughters, Kirsten (Stephen Kramer) Amussen of South Bend and Martha (Doug) Miller of Loveland, CO; son, Franz (Kay) Amussen of Salt Lake City, UT; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and one sister, Mariana Doering of Yuma, AZ. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Amussen, Jr. Francis served his country honorably with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and rose to the rank of Major. He earned his bachelor's degree in Engineering and was a surveyor for Lang, Feeney and Associates, Inc. He was also a truck driver for North American Trucking as well as an independent truck driver. Francis loved classical music and earned his master's degree in music from the University of Notre Dame. He also volunteered at the University of Notre Dame for 29 years as the Voice of the Fighting Irish Band. A gathering of friends will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 pm Monday, August 5, 2013 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Francis may be donated to the Center for Hospice Care, 4220 Edison Lakes Pkwy, Ste 210, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
