George N. Polales Jr.

March 18, 1924 - March 2, 2014
NOTRE DAME - George N. Polales Jr., 89, formerly of Park Ridge, IL, died peacefully Sunday evening, March 2, 2014, at Dujarie House, Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame. He was born March 18, 1924, in Oak Park, IL, to the late George N. Sr. & Isabelle (Brizzolara) Polales. On Aug. 29, 1947, in Chicago, IL, George married the former Mary Ellen Carey, who survives. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by daughters, Linda (Alden) Leonard of San Marcos, CA, and Kathy (Joe) Hickey of South Bend; son, David of Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Lt. Commanders Sean and Beth Leonard of North Carolina, Joey (Melissa) Hickey of Granger, Kelly Hickey of Indianapolis and Kevin Hickey of Chicago, IL; great-grandchildren, Rachel, Charlotte, Gene-vieve, Lauren, Kaitlyn and Joey IV; and his sister, Doris Colucci, also of Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by another sister, Phyllis Meixner. George was a member of our Greatest Generation and proudly served in WW II in Patton's 3rd Army, where he was a combat engineer. He earned the Silver Star for valor in clearing a mine field. George played the violin for the Chicago Symphony. He was an excellent athlete in his younger days, and along with beating Bobby Riggs in tennis, he won the Junior State Championship in Illinois for tennis. George graduated from Northwestern University in Chicago and also attended law school there. He worked in law book sales for Callahan and Company for many years. After retiring from there, he worked another ten years for the Cook County Law Library in Chicago. He was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre and Immaculate Conception Church. In his prime, George loved to play golf and cards and loved all Chicago sports, especially the Bears and his beloved Cubs. He had a truly engaging personality and great sense of humor. His smile will be forever missed. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Friday, March 7, 2014, in St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, where friends may visit with the family from 10 - 11 am.
