Most Reverend John Michael D'Arcy


Aug. 18, 1932 - Feb. 3, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Most Reverend John Michael D'Arcy, the only son of Irish immigrants, was born on August 18th, 1932, in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents (both deceased) were Michael John and Margaret (Moran) D'Arcy. He is survived by two sisters, Sister Anne D'Arcy, a Sister of St. Joseph, and Joan Sheridan (and husband, Hugh); and brother-in-law, Vito. His sister, Mary Caprio, preceded him in death. He is also survived by several nephews, a niece, and grandnieces and grandnephews. He began preparation for the priesthood in September 1949 at St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts. He studied in Rome at the Angelicum from 1965 to 1968, and received his doctorate in spiritual theology in 1968. He served as spiritual director and professor of spiritual theology at St. John's Seminary from 1968 to 1985. Bishop D'Arcy was ordained an Auxiliary Bishop of Boston on February 11th, 1975, and was appointed Vicar for Spiritual Development for the archdiocese at the same time. He continued to serve as a spiritual director at St. John's Seminary also. On July 21st, 1981, Bishop D'Arcy was appointed Regional Bishop for the northern area of the Archdiocese of Boston, known as the Lowell Region. Bishop D'Arcy continued to direct the archdiocesan Office of Spiritual Development. On February 26th, 1985, Bishop D'Arcy was appointed eighth Bishop of Ft. Wayne - South Bend, and was installed on May 1st, 1985. He divided the diocese into six vicariates, each with an episcopal vicar, for better pastoral care. Mass of Christian Burial will be noon Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1122 S. Calhoun, Fort Wayne, IN, with visitation from 9:00 am to 11:30 am at the church. Reception of the body and morning prayer will be today, Feb. 6th, at St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St., South Bend, IN, at 10:00 am, with visitation throughout the day, with a Rosary at 5:00 pm and a Mass of Transferal at 7:00 pm. Reception of the body and morning prayer will also be Thursday, Feb 7, 2013, beginning at 10:00 am. Visitation will be held throughout the day, with the Rosary at 5:00 pm and Evening Prayer at 7:00 pm, also at the church. Entombment will be in the crypt of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Fort Wayne. Preferred memorials are to: The Seminary Education Fund; The Priest Pension Fund; The Bishop D'Arcy Catholic Education Fund; any one of the four Diocesan Catholic High Schools; Women's Care Center; Christ Child Society; St. John the Baptist Parish, Fort Wayne; or St. Monica Parish, Mishawaka, IN.
