SOUTH BEND - Michael D. Nyikos, 74, of Elgin, IL, formerly of South Bend, IN, passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, IL. He was born on August 9, 1938, in South Bend, IN, the son of Stephen and Anna (Bella) Nyikos. He graduated from South Bend Central High School. After high school, he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps and served in Korea. After returning, he attended Indiana University South Bend and worked for Western Electric. On May 21, 1966, he married Barbara J. Stump. They later moved to Elgin, IL, and he worked for Mitsubishi Electric and later Kelly Services. Michael was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame football and served for a time as an usher at Notre Dame football games. He loved classic cars, John Wayne movies, and spending time with his family. Michael is survived by his wife, Barbara Nyikos of Elgin, IL; his children, Steven Nyikos and Alexandra Nyikos, both of Elgin, IL, and Andrew (Julie) Nyikos of Odessa, FL ; his grandsons, Benjamin Nyikos and Dylan Nyikos; a brother, Stephen (Julie) Nyikos of Broken Arrow, OK; a sister, Teresa (Don) Yates of South Bend, IN; and a sister-in-law, Joan Nyikos of Indianapolis, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Anna Nyikos; his brothers and sisters, Robert Nyikos, Joseph Nyikos, Richard Nyikos, Ann Matthew, Katherine Janasiak and twins, Barbara and Marie Nyikos, who both died in infancy; and by his granddaughter, Hannah Nyikos. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN.
