Raymond Dings Sr.

NILES - Ray was born on Nov. 30, 1920 in Detroit, MI, the son of James and Mable (Fritz) Dings. He was united in marriage to Mildred Martin on March 28, 1947 in Niles, MI. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Boston during WWII earning the Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Stars, Asiatic-Pacific with 8 Stars and the Chinese Liberation. Ray was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Niles, the Niles American Legion Post and the Teamsters, driving semi rigs for 47 years. Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping with his buddies Roy and Bob Kissinger. He liked bowling where his friends gave him the nickname "Yogi." He is survived by his wife Mildred of Niles, MI, his sons Robert (Mary) Dings of Buchanan, MI, Raymond (Sandy) Dings Jr. of Holland, MI, James (June) Dings of Niles, MI, daughters Harriett McElheney of Pokagon, MI, Jean (Mike) Andrews of CA, several nieces and nephews, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, brother Glenn (Nancy) Dings, of Coloma, MI and sister Lavina Messal of FL. He was preceded by his parents, first wife Opal, daughter Racheal Simpson, sisters Mary Lou King and Patricia Hoffman; brothers Tom, Russell and Paul Dings. His family will gather with friends on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, from 4pm till 6pm at Clark Chapel, 405 Center St., Dowagiac, MI. His funeral service will be on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at 11am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1340 Sycamore St. Niles, MI. Ray will be laid to rest at Mission Hill Memorial Gardens, Niles, MI with Military Rites. Memorial in his name may be made to Hospice at Home, 4017 Chamberlain Rd.
