SOUTH BEND - Mary L. Snellgrove, 89, passed away in her home on Monday, February 4, 2013. She was born in Eldorado, Illinois, to Clyde and Mettie (Shinall) Mitchell, and spent her childhood in Clay, Kentucky, where she was the homecoming queen and salutatorian of her high school. She later moved to South Bend and worked as a carhop at the former Fiesta Restaurant, where she met the love of her life, John J.P. Snellgrove, whom she wed in 1944 in St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Mary was active in South Bend throughout much of her life, particularly in the medical community. She worked at Saint Joseph Hospital and for the offices of Dr. Byler and Dr. Orr. She also was a co-owner of the former Sewing Basket. Mary is survived by her daughters, Suzanne Nielsen of Battle Creek, Michigan, Joanne Schaeffer of South Bend, Marianne Whelchel of Greenwood, Indiana, and Louanne Bennett of Spring City, Tennessee; sons-in-law, David Nielsen, Mark Schaeffer and Robert Whelchel; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Colleen, David Michael, Kevin, Kristin, Sean, Kara, Eric and Meredith; and four great-grandchildren, Max, Zachary, Sam and Devereaux. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; daughter, Dianne Fitzpatrick; brothers, Kenneth Mitchell and Luke Mitchell; sister, Ann (Mitchell) Mills; grandson, John David Nielsen; and sons-in-law, James Fitzpatrick and Robert Bennett. Mary was an avid traveler, talented seamstress, superb cook, fierce card player, and genial hostess, famous for her pecan rolls and cocktails. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Saturday, February 9, 2013, in Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 Mayflower Road, South Bend, where family and friends may visit from 9:00 - 10:00 am. Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Mary may be donated to St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph County, Inc., 520 Crescent Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617; or to , 610 N.
