Sept. 1, 1941 - Feb. 12, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Betty Clara Childress, 71, who was born on September 1, 1941, to the union of George W. and Sarah Katherine Hill Sr., in South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in Memorial Hospital of South Bend on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, to be with the Lord. Everyone who met and knew Betty always had good things to say about her. She was a giving, loving and sweet person. Some people would even call her "Mommy." Her good heart and forgiving spirit always shone through. She never had an unkind word for anyone. Although she went through many trials, tribulations, suffering and pain, she never complained. She remained humble and selfless, always more concerned about others. Betty attended South Bend schools. She gave her life to Christ at an early age, being baptized at the age of 12, and sang in the church choir. She worked hard to support her children. From two marriages, Betty had five children, Randall Steven (Joann) Walker, Marsha Ann Childress-Jones, Sandra Kay Childress, Francine Maria Childress and William Franklin Childress Jr. Betty enjoyed family times and watching movies. She loved bringing in the New Year watching the ball drop with Dick Clark. One of her favorite songs was "Love and Happiness" by Al Green. Betty was known to call all of her children and grandchildren daily. In her last days, Betty would sing "I'm Going Up Yonder," for she knew her destination. Betty is survived by her children; eight grandchildren, Tanisha (Clinton) Davis, Robert Price, Randall "RJ" Walker Jr., Deandre Walker, Sarieta Walker, Earl Campbell, Donte James and Tatiyana Childress; five great-grandchildren, Vernado Malone Jr., Victor Malone, Amari Malone, Destiny Clayton and Doneyale James; one great-great-grandchild, Vernado Malone III; two sisters, Josie Thompson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Patricia Washington of Flint, Michigan; one brother, George (Rozelia) Washington Hill Jr. of South Bend, Indiana; as well as a host of loved nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Rose Anne Austin, Verneal Leonard and Evelyn Childress; brothers, Robert Hill and Donald Hill; and granddaughter, Sarieta Marie Price. Please celebrate her homegoing today, February 18, 2013, with visitation from 11 a.m.-12:00 p.m., and funeral service at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, 137 East Indiana Ave., South Bend, IN, with Pastor Rickardo Taylor officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary.
