Oct. 19, 1935 - Dec. 7, 2012 NOTRE DAME - Brother Donald Patrick McIntyre, C.S.C., age 77, died on Dec. 7, 2012, at Dujarie House, in Notre Dame, Indiana. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 19, 1935, the son of John and Mary Ann (Gibbons) McIntyre. He attended St. James Elementary School and St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio, and graduated in 1954. He worked for a year and then followed his calling to join the Holy Cross Brothers and entered Sacred Heart Juniorate in Watertown, Wisconsin, in September 1955. He began his religious training six months later at St. Joseph's Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Indiana, where he pronounced his first vows on January 26, 1957. If you ever walked into a community gathering anywhere and heard waves of laughter, it was very possible that in the center of the group you would find Brother Donald McIntyre "holding court." He had his own way of recounting and coloring incidents and episodes in his life of many different ministries. Don was never at a loss for words, an original "happy face," who could turn just about any circumstance into a hilarious story. He had a variety of assignments and experiences in Holy Cross. His first one was to learn the secrets of cooking from Brother John Chrysostom at Dujarie Hall. He then served as a canvasser for the Ave Maria magazine, and again cooked for the community at Columba Hall with Brother Amadeus. In 1966, he served as the assistant to the Mission Promoter, Brother Gonzaga Day, and helped him in many different chores. In 1969 he went to Boysville in Clinton, Michigan, to help with the duties of caring for the students for the next 9 years. In 1978, he joined the Mountain Community of Holy Cross Brothers who were ministering to the needy in Coalfield and Harriman, Tennessee. He worked with Brother Gonzaga in his Thrift Shop and cared for the people in the parish of Blessed Sacrament Church for 7 years. In 1984, Donald was invited by a high school classmate to oversee and assist in a retirement community in Pompano Beach, Florida, where he worked for 12 years, while also assisting the senior citizens in nearby parishes. He came back to Notre Dame in 1997 to join the nursing staff at Dujarie House. In 2001 he had a serious health issue which required open chest surgery and spent a year recuperating at St. Joseph Medical Center in South Bend before returning to reside with the community at Columba Hall. In 2008 he moved to the Schubert Villa at Holy Cross Village and in 2010 became a resident at Dujarie House where he continued his concern for others (especially his family and the many friends he made over the years) as well as entertaining the community and nursing staff with stories and his contagious, saintly good humor. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 11th, at Our Lady of Holy Cross Chapel from 9:00 to 11:00 am on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will then follow with burial afterward at St. Joseph Cemetery of the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions, in honor of Brother Donald McIntyre, C.S.C., to support the mission and ministries of the Brothers may be sent to Brothers of Holy Cross, Office of Development, P.O. Box 460, Notre Dame, IN 46556.
