SOUTH BEND - Earl M. Cassells, 91, peacefully passed away at Hospice House in Elkhart on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012. Earl was born Dec. 4, 1921, in South Bend, IN, to Samuel and Berniece (Holston) Cassells, and lived his entire life in the South Bend area. He was happily married on Feb. 22, 1948, to Helen L. Frank for 55 years. She preceded him in death on June 16, 2003. Earl was also preceded in death by his father, Samuel; mother, Berniece; and sisters, Dorothy Pozgay of South Bend & Gladys Branco of Holstein, Iowa. Earl grew up on a farm until joining WW II on his 21st birthday. He was a veteran with 40 months service as a Technical Sergeant in the Medical Corps in Europe. He worked as a sales agent for Standard Oil Co. (Amoco and now BP) for 34 years prior to his retirement. Earl was very active in the German Township Lions for over 40 years, a charter member of the German Township Fire Department, and a longtime member of the First Christian Church of South Bend. He is now a member of First Baptist Church of South Bend and a member of St. Joseph Lodge #45, F&AM, and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, where he was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award. Earl is survived by his son, Mark (Linda) Cassells; daughter, Janet (William) Steiner; 5 grandchildren, Michael (Molli) Cassells, Anne (Keith) Railling, Kathryn, Meg and Gus Steiner; plus 4 great-grandchildren, Adam & Katelyn Cassells, Brianna & Allyson Railling. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. today, Dec. 9th, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, where members of St. Joseph Lodge #45 will conduct a Masonic memorial service at 6:00 p.m. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10th, at the funeral home, with one hour of calling prior to the service. Rev. Janell Bloem, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate. Graveside services and military rites will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
