Jan. 21, 2014 CASSOPOLIS - Henry William Vogtmann, 87, of 65460 W. Peninsula Dr., Cassopolis, MI, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2014. "Hank" or "Bill" to friends, Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, who he married in 1952. He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Vogtmann of Kalamazoo, MI, Barbara Belland of Cassopolis, MI; and granddaughters, Skyenne, Tara and Jessamine, Donna Vogtmann of Kalamazoo, MI, and granddaughters, Chanterelle, Sureau and Lierre; and his son, William Vogtmann of Pearland, TX; and grandson, Kevin, and granddaughter, Dana. Henry, an only child, was born in Govan, Saskatchewan, to Julius and Rosalie Vogtmann, German immigrants, went to a one-room school house, then went to Stuyvesant High in Lower Manhattan, New York, NY, after the family moved to the U.S.A. After high school Henry joined the Navy as a Radioman and was stationed in postwar Japan. After the Navy he worked on shipboard radio systems for Navy contractors, then became a self-taught Electrical Engineer and spent much of his career on missile guidance systems at Bendix, Mishawaka, IN, where he obtained a patent for radar improvement. Later he specialized in quality control engineering at companies including National Water Lift, Kalamazoo, MI; Cleveland Pneumatic, Cleveland, OH; and the AM General Humvee Plant in South Bend, IN. Henry and Edna lived in Cape May Courthouse, NJ; Sacramento, CA; South Bend, IN; Portage, MI; Cleveland, OH; and Cassopolis, MI. They retired to Shavehead Lake, a favorite spot where he was active in the Peninsula Association for many years. Henry remained active taking walks, talking to neighbors, visiting with his children and grandchildren, and taking care of his cats. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Nature Conservancy. A memorial service is planned for 1- 4pm Feb. 22 at the Holiday Inn Express, 1207 W Broadway, Three Rivers, MI.
