Dear Birdie and Family,
Please know that I send my prayers and thoughts for you and your family. Truly, Doc was my favorite professor at SMC. His love of educating was clear and it was a gift to be his student. I was always happy when I had his class - and if I wasn't in a good mood when I arrived at class his crazy tie of the day would make me smile.
He was genuinely interested and concerned about his students and that is not often said of professors. He had a profound influence on me and it is with true sadness that I read of his passing.
I graduated in 1985 and headed to Honduras to volunteer for two years. After that I went to Haiti to volunteer and I know that it was Doc's influence that led me to my decision to volunteer in Latin American and the Caribbean.
Doc and I kept in touch for many years (he even wrote a reference for my first job back in the US!). He was an inspiration to me and I will keep his memory in my heart.
May God bless you and your family.
Sincerely,
Mary Miltenberger Reed, SMC 1985

I want to extend my sincere condolences both to Professor McElroy's colleagues at Saint Mary's College and his immediate family. I was shocked to recently discover that he had passed. Although we did not meet personally, we communicated via email. For some time I have been reading his work on visitor harassment. So, when I was about to embark on my own enquiry on the topic, I requested his participation in an expert panel. He responded and declined my request. But, what struck me about his email is not that he declined but that although he was ailing (which he indicated) he took the time to respond to my email. I sensed grace from his email. I will remember him, always.

I am very sorry to hear of Jerry's death. Please accept my sincere condolences. As a former faculty member at Saint Mary's I enjoyed encountering Jerry at the occasional college event. I was amazed at his gentility and kindness. I remember when I first came to Saint Mary's and he read a poem at a faculty mentor group gathering. I was shocked that a business faculty member was also a poet! I told him how much I enjoyed his poem and the next day he emailed me a copy. The world is less kind without him.

This man touched our lives in ways only God can know. He opened new worlds for his students and gave much more than just an education. He will be missed but never, never forgotten. He spoke to me of his family. How he loved you. How he loved. A hero indeed,

Jerry was such a nice person and nice professor. We always talked about the students whom both of us knew when we met on campus. We will miss him. May he rest in peace in heaven!

Dear Birdie--I fondly remember Jerry as a colleague at CVI back in the 1970's. We met again at ND in the 1990's and reminisced about our time in the USVI. Great guy. Please accept my condolences for your loss.
