Lillian A. Martens

Feb. 15, 1927 - May 25, 2018

SOUTH BEND - Lillian A. “Sis” Martens, 91, passed away on Friday, May 25, 2018 with her son and daughter-in-law by her side.

Lillian was born February 15, 1927, the only daughter to the late John & Anastasia (Piskoz) Marek. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Edward Marek, Harry Marek, and twins, John and Frank Marek. On April 27, 1946 Lillian married August Martens; he preceded her in death on April 12, 1992.

Survivors of Lillian include her children, Remie “Ray” (Anne) Martens; grandchildren, Shane (Kathleen) Martens and Kimberly (Karl) Varga; and great-grandchildren, Abigail & Victoria Varga, Brianna, Brittany, Brandon, and Bryce Martens all of whom were lovingly by her side until her death. Lillian is also survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Charles) Shearer; and grandchildren, Perry Shearer, Aaron (Kahley) Shearer, and Christopher (Jennifer) Shearer. Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, Ann Marek and Gertie Marek, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Lillian attended Crumstown Elementary School, Lydick and Green High School. Lillian often shared stories of her childhood, especially being the only girl with a house full of brothers. She frequently spoke of how the wars brought many hardships to her family, and how happy she was when her brothers and son returned safely.

Lillian spent many years farming with her husband and family, as well as working in the factory business. She was well known at the Farmers Market, where she sold flowers and cookies. She enjoyed traveling, especially in her retirement years. Lillian was very talented with crocheting and knitting. She made beautiful pieces for her family which they will always cherish. Lillian was an excellent cook and baker. She made the best bread, pies, and kiefles. Lillian enjoyed time spent wilt her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Visitation for Lillian will be held 4:00pm to 8:00pm Tuesday, May 29, 2018 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., with a Rosary to be prayed at 6:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am Wednesday, May 30, 2018 in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 922 E. Colfax Avenue, South Bend, Indiana 46617.
