SOUTH BEND - Lorene (Sistrunk) Lee, 86, of South Falcon Street, South Bend, IN, passed away peacefully in her sleep at West Bend Nursing Facility on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 10:15 a.m., after a long illness. She was born on June 27, 1927, in Munford, Alabama, to Walter and Josephine (Johnson) Sistrunk. She received her primary and secondary education through the Alabama school system. She relocated to South Bend in the early 1960s where she united with Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Henry Giden Sr. She was a member of the Pastor's Social Club and senior choir. She was a charter member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, also under the leadership of Rev. Henry Giden Sr., where she attended faithfully until her health failed. At Progressive, she was a member of the senior and mass choirs. She was employed by Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, for 28 years as a surgical instrument technician, retiring in 1995. She loved to sing gospel and had fond memories of singing with various gospel groups throughout the city. Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Essie Mae Boyd, Munford, Alabama; a special nephew, James Fred Sistrunk, Illinois; and a special niece, Victoria Allen, Anniston, Alabama; along with her longtime caregivers, Wendell and Kathy Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Josie Sistrunk; brothers, Frank, Walter Jr., Carl, David, Joseph, and Ulysses; and sisters, Rosielean Chapman and Emma Sistrunk. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 23, 2014, at Alford's Mortuary, with burial following at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, IN. Visitation will be held one prior to services at the chapel. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary.
