Mar. 14, 1930 - Jan. 31, 2014 ELKHART - Louis J. "Louie" DeFreese 83, passed away at Riverside Village January 31, 2014. He was born March 14, 1930 in Elkhart to Henry & Ida (Godshalk) DeFreese. On November 23, 1952 he married Elnora Plank, she preceded him in death on August 29, 1988. On July 19, 2009 he married Pauline (Millie) Martin, she survives. Also surviving is 1 daughter Cheryl DeFreese, of Mishawaka; 2 grandchildren, Scott DeFreese, Sarah Ferris; 8 great grandchildren; 1 sister Mary Alice Kovatch of Elkhart. He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Bill DeFreese & Steve DeFreese, by sisters, Delores Pontius and twin sister, Lois DeFreese as well as 13 other brothers and sisters. Louie graduated in 1947 from Elkhart High School, was the owner of DeFreese Construction Company, and taught building trades at Elkhart Career Center for 16 years until he retired in 1987. He was in the U.S. Navy, a member of Calvary United Methodist Church where he ran work camps for 26 years, and a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge #99 and the Elkhart Eagles Lodge. Louie enjoyed bowling, roller skating, and dancing, especially square dancing. Visitation for Louie will be Tuesday, February 4, 2014 from 3-7 p.m. at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. A Moose Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 pm. Tuesday at the funeral home. Additional visitation will be 1 hour prior to the 11 a.m. service at Calvary United Methodist Church Wednesday, February 5, 2014, presiding will be Pastor Larry Smith. Cremation will follow and burial will be held at a later in in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Calvary United Methodist Church. Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
