SOUTH BEND - Richard T. Smith, 83, residing in South Bend, passed away at 1:00 pm Thursday, May 2, 2013 in Arborwood Assisted Living Center, Granger. He was born on November 16, 1929 in Plymouth, IN to the late Cecil Thomas and Goldie (Brown) Smith, and remained a lifelong area resident. On June 30, 1955 in South Bend, Richard married the former Donna Marie Patterson, who survives. In addition to his loving wife, Donna of South Bend, Richard is survived by his daughter, Karen Smith-Taljaard and Robert Guthrie of South Bend; son, Kevin Smith of Whiteland, IN; and four grandchildren, Spencer and Tara Taljaard and Chandler and Bailey Smith. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Chelsea Taljaard; sisters, Ruth and Dorothy; and brothers, Harry, Gale, Collin and Robert. Richard served his country honorably in the United States Army. He retired from the Elkhart Truth as Production Engineer in 1993 after 25 years. Richard was a member of the St. Joseph Lodge # 45, F. & AM and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, where he received the MSA (Meritorious Service Award). He was also a member of Knights Templar and Orak Shrine in Michigan City and was a driver for the Shriners' Children's Hospital in Chicago. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm Sunday, May 5, 2013 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Burial will take place at a later date in Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 - 4:00 pm Sunday in the funeral home prior to services. Special thanks to the staff at the Center for Hospice Care and Arborwood Living Center for the love and care provided for Richard over the last few years.
