SOUTH BEND - Dr. Robert Ernest Christin, formerly of South Bend died in Waltham, MA at the age of 91. During WWII he served on a destroyer escort and participated in the Allied invasion on Okinawa. He obtained BA, MA, and PhD degrees in English from Ohio State University. From 1954 to 1965, Dr. Christin was an associate professor in the English Dept. at the University of Notre Dame. He helped direct the nation's Upward Bound Program from 1965 to 1969. Dr. Christin served as president of St. Norbert College in DePere, WI and president of Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY. Dr. Christin is survived by his children, Robert F. (Barbara) of Washington Grove, MD, George J. (Audrey Schwartz) of Medford, MA, Michael P. (Terry) of Toano, VA, Matthew B. of Portola Valley, CA, Joseph E. of Waltham, MA, Rita C. Bertino (Joseph) of Ossining, NY, Edward J. of Miami Beach, FL, Mary T. (John Becker) of Waltham, MA and John P. (Linda) of New Milford, CT; his brother, Paul A. (Frances) of Naperville, IL; 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A mass for Dr. Christin will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Lakeville, IN. Afterwards, his remains will be laid to rest near those of his wife Dorothy and son Paul at the adjacent Mount Calvary Cemetery.
