Dec. 19, 1936 - March 9, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Robert Elwood Dungy, 77, residing in South Bend, IN, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2014, in Memorial Hospital of South Bend. He was born December 19, 1936, in Jackson, Michigan, a son of the late Herbert & Alberta (Milben) Dungy. Rev. Dungy began his career as a Social Studies teacher at Westside Junior High School, and also taught Black History at Central High School, both in Elkhart, IN. He also served as an instructor at Bethel College, Mishawaka. He graduated from Detroit Lutheran High School, Moody Bible Institute, Grace College, Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, and Christian Theological Seminary. He began his ministerial work with the United Methodist Church in the mid-1970s until his retirement in 2002. He served at the Gary Outreach Ministry, and Ambridge UMC in Gary as an Urban Missioner, Associate Pastor at First United Methodist Church, South Bend; Fairmount UMC, Dean of the Upper Room and Director of Church Cultivation in Nashville, TN; Superintendent of the former Columbus District, as well as serving churches in Marion, South Bend, and Elkhart, IN. At the time of his passing, he was attending Evangel Heights United Methodist Church in South Bend. On July 22, 1961, in Fremont, Ohio, he was united in marriage to Constance L. Tucker. He is survived by his loving wife Constance of 52 years, along with two daughters, Jocelyn (Anthony) Owens of Virginia Beach, VA, Angela K. (Charles) Bond of South Bend, IN; a son, Stephen (Michelle) Dungy of South Bend, IN; and seven grandchildren, Constance Owens, Toni Owens, Alex Bond, Alonzo Bond, Aaron Bond, Marshall Dungy and Skylar Dungy. He is also survived by two brothers, Thomas (Imelda) Dungy of Oak Park, MI, Richard (Carolyn) Dungy of Windsor, Ontario. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose Marie Ford, Mavis Penn and Florene Parker; and two brothers, Harold & Wilbur Dungy. A celebration of Rev. Dungy's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, 114 N. Ironwood Dr., South Bend, IN. Rev. Dr. Patrick Somers, pastor of the church, will officiate. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Evangel Heights Church. Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, is assisting the family with arrangements.
