Walter S. "Sonny" Szostakowski June 20, 1943 - Aug. 22, 2015 SOUTH BEND - Walter S. "Sonny" Szostakowski, Jr., 72, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 8:49 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Hospice House in South Bend. He was born on June 20, 1943 to the late Walter S., Sr. and Josephine (Szymanski) Szostakowski in Lowell, MA. He has lived most of his life in South Bend, coming from Lowell. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Charles Szostakowski. Walter graduated in 1960 from Washington High School, South Bend, IN. He taught Heating and Cooling Classes at Ivy Tech for several years. Walter retired in 2010 from Zimmer, Inc. in Warsaw, IN, where he worked as a Tool and Die Maker for 35 years. On August 9, 1969, he married Patricia J. (Enders) Van Dusen at St. Mary Polish National Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. Walter is survived by his loving wife, Patricia J. Szostakowski of South Bend, IN; two daughters, Carol King of South Bend, IN and Debra Van Dusen of Niles, MI; three sons, Jerry (Tina) Van Dusen of South Bend, IN, Gary (Sharon) Van Dusen of South Bend, IN and Harold, Jr. (Norma) Van Dusen of Edwardsburg, MI; 12 grandchildren, Robert Smith, Ron Smith, James Smith, Joshua King, Shawn Stevens, Patricia Stevens-Stoelting, Travis Paul, Dustin Van Dusen, Angel Van Dusen, Gary Van Dusen, Jr., Jason Van Dusen, and Timothy Van Dusen; 26 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Wanda Figueroa of South Bend, IN, Helen Halfen of Arlington Heights, IL and Victoria (Howard) Mc Mahon of Capron, IL. Walter was a U.S. Navy Veteran, where he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of National Museum of the United States Air Force, which is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. He was also a member of St. Mary Polish National Catholic Church in South Bend, IN and a 32nd degree Mason of the Ancient York Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Lowell, MA. Walter enjoyed fishing, and was a jack-of-all trades and a master of several. He loved antique cars and airplanes, and was an avid Notre Dame Fan. Visitation will be from 4 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2015 and from 1 2 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2015, both at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, IN. Entombment will follow in Riverview Cemetery, South Bend, IN.
