NEW CARLISLE - Robert D. Hiles, Sr., 77, of New Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, January 21st, at 9:30 PM in his residence with his loving family at his bedside after an extended illness. Robert was born on April 6, 1936, in Fayette County, PA, to the late James R. and Florence M. (Thorpe) Hiles. He had resided in the Michiana area for 60 years, coming from Dunbar, PA. On April 6, 1965, in South Bend, he married the former Marilyn K. Chapman, who survives. Robert retired in 1999 from Rose Fuel in South Bend where he worked as a truck driver. Robert is also survived by one daughter, Joan K. Hiles of Elkhart; three sons, James L. (Judy) Hiles of New Carlisle, Robert D. (Vicky) Hiles, Jr. of New Carlisle and David R. (Debbie) Hiles of South Bend; one brother, Sam (Mary Kay) Hiles of Dunbar, PA; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, cutting grass, working on cars, spending time with his grandkids, and being with his loving wife. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather who was cherished by his family and all who knew him during his life journey. Visitation hours will be Saturday, January 25th, from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM (EST) at Hanley and Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at 23421 State Road 23/ West Ireland Road, South Bend. A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 2nd, at 11:15 AM (Central Time) at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, New Carlisle, with Pastor Robert Raschka officiating. Cremation has taken place. The family request that all memorial contributions be made to Maple Grove United Methodist Church, located at 6655 E. 1000 N, New Carlisle, IN 46552. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Hiles family.
